PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Oregon University men's basketball team will have two of its games televised on the Pacific Northwest regional network, ROOT SPORTS, the WOU Athletic Department released Monday.
The Wolves (10-4, 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) are currently tied atop the GNAC standings and riding a conference-long six-game win streak. Western Oregon will have the opportunity to showcase its stellar season on a network that covers Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, and the ROOT SPORTS regional networks combine to reach nine million homes across 18 states.
"Western Oregon University is proud to have the opportunity to showcase the institution to so many people," Western Oregon University President Mark Weiss said. "We look forward to highlighting our school through our athletics, and cheer on our men's basketball team."
Western Oregon's home contests against Northwest Nazarene and Simon Fraser will be covered on the network. As a result, the Northwest Nazarene tipoff time has been moved to 5 p.m. on Feb. 8, and the Simon Fraser date has been moved to Wednesday, Feb. 26, with a 7 p.m. start. Please adjust your calendars accordingly.
"WOU Athletics is thrilled to participate with our fellow GNAC schools and ROOT SPORTS to provide great exposure of our men's basketball program, while providing our Western Oregon University alumni and fan base the opportunity to view their Wolves on a premier regional network," Western Oregon Executive Director of Athletics
Barbara Dearing said. "Partnering with ROOT SPORTS will increase the University's visibility within the Pacific Northwest as a destination to pursue a higher education degree."
Beginning on Jan. 11, ROOT SPORTS will air six men's games and two women's games throughout the GNAC regular-season schedule. The series, running Jan. 11 through March 1, marks the fifth straight season that the GNAC has had a presence on ROOT SPORTS, which reaches 3.4 million homes across the northwestern United States.
"We're excited for the chance to play in front of such a broad audience across the region and country," WOU Head Coach
Brady Bergeson said. "This is an excellent opportunity to expose not only our program, but the school to such a big audience."
ROOT SPORTS is the home of the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Timbers, among numerous other professional and collegiate sports teams in the Pacific Northwest.
"We are very pleased to continue and develop our relationship with ROOT SPORTS," GNAC Commissioner Dave Haglund commented on the partnership. "We are excited for all of our member institutions at the opportunity to receive exposure on one of the leading sports broadcasting companies in the Northwest."
