LAKEWOOD, Colo. – For the second time on its trip through the Centennial State, the Western Oregon women's soccer team experienced overtime. Unlike last Sunday's result, the Wolves received a little help from a Colorado Christian own goal in the 94
th minute to post a 2-1 win in non-conference play.
The host Cougars scored late in the first half, forcing the Wolves (3-1) to search for an equalizer in the second half. WOU's tying goal came in the 71
st minute off the foot of senior
Shelby Peterson for her first goal of the year.
Western Oregon continued to fire shots over the final 15 minutes.
Hailey Berg's effort in the 77
th minute was one of four CCU (0-2-1) saves.
Allison Sprecher had another opportunity three minutes later that was saved. The final look in regulation came with 26 second left.
Machaela Rapozo attempted a header, but the ball tracked over the crossbar.
Four minutes into overtime, a miscue by CCU saw a player score on their own goal to give WOU a victory.
The Wolves acted as the offensive aggressors holding a 11-6 overall shot advantage.
Mariah Konyn and
Taylor Higa paced the offense with two shots each. Goalkeeper
Lindsey Mabinuori faced six shots and made four saves.
Western Oregon returns home on Monday, Sept. 14 for its final non-conference tilt against the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College. Kick is set for 3 p.m. at The WOU Soccer Field.
