WOU soccer wins season opener over Warner Pacific, 7-0

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon controlled the pace from the start in a 7-0 season-opening victory over Warner Pacific on Thursday afternoon. The Wolves scored three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the contest. Veterans of the club played a big part early, giving the newer players quality match time in the second half. Vicky Cruz Rosales and Makana Pundyke each scored twice while Rosales later added a pair of assists.

Junior Mariah Konyn dribbled from the right side and wasted no time recording Western Oregon's (1-0-0) first goal of the year with a top-shelf goal at 4:30. Four minutes later, the first Rosales goal materialized after a blast from Dana Goularte deflected off the Knights' goalkeeper onto the right foot of the senior midfielder. The lead ballooned to 3-0 after Pundyke rocketed a shot off her left foot into the top-left corner of the goal.

In the 22nd minute, Rosales broke away from the Warner Pacific (1-2-1) defense for a goal from just inside 10 yards. The final goal of the opening half came in the 24th minute. Allison Sprecher took a beautiful pass near midfield from Savannah Bogan and fired it past the keeper for a 5-0 lead at the half.

Pundyke's second goal (67') and the final tally from Allison Frost (74') were both aided with helpers from Rosales.

The Wolves controlled possession in the match, outshooting the Knights, 17-5. Goalkeepers Lindsey Mabinuori and Nicole Tejada shared in the shutout. Mabinouri had four saves for the Wolves.

WOU heads to Colorado for a three-match road trip, opening at Colorado State Pueblo on Sunday Sept. 6. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. Mountain time (6 p.m. Pacific).
