WOU drops road trip opener at CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – Western Oregon opened the road portion of its 2015 schedule with a tough 1-0 loss in overtime at Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday night.

The Thunderwolves (1-0) scored the game-winner at 91:50 on an own goal following a corner kick from Kylee Sakaguchi. The overtime goal broke a scoreless stalemate that saw CSU-P hold an 8-3 overall shot advantage.

Western Oregon's first chance came in the eighth minute with a shot by Taylor Higa that sailed wide of the goal. Two more tries came less than a minute apart early in the second half. An effort from Makana Pundyke in the 59th minute was blocked away by CSU-P keeper Allison Darr. In the 60th minute, Darr saved a shot from Vicky Cruz Rosales while the Thunderwolves cleared away a Higa corner kick 51 seconds later.

Colorado State-Pueblo had two good looks, one in regulation and one before the eventual game-winner in overtime. Both shots missed wide to keep the score 0-0. Western Oregon (1-1) goalkeeper Lindsey Mabinuori had three saves within a 20-minutes span over the final moments of the first half and opening minutes of the second half.

Western Oregon will look to bounce back on Tuesday during a neutral site match against New Mexico Highlands in Pueblo. The game will kick off at 5 p.m. Mountain Time at CSU-P's Gonzales Complex.
