MONMOUTH, Ore.— Cross country teams from more than 30 colleges and universities will converge this week as Western Oregon University will host the NCAA DII West Region Championships at the Ash Creek Preserve on Saturday, Nov. 4.
With national qualifying spots up for grabs, a dozen teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the most recent NCAA DII poll will be in action, including the No. 1 ranked Cal Baptist women and the No. 4-ranked men from Chico State.
The top region teams from each of the eight regions will automatically advance to the NCAA DII National Championships while eight at-large selections will also advance.
The women's 6,000-meter race is set to begin at 10 a.m. while the men will toe the line at 11:15 a.m.
In addition to the top-ranked women's squad from Cal Baptist, four other teams will be looking to dethrone the two-time defending regional champs. Ranked fourth and fifth in the country, respectively, Alaska Anchorage and Chico State give the region three of the top five programs while Simon Fraser (No. 9) and Cal State San Marcos (No. 12) join the fray for five of the top 12 ranked teams in NCAA DII.
As for the men's race, No. 4-ranked Chico State will be the pre-race favorite while No. 6-ranked Cal Baptist, No. 9-ranked Cal Poly Pomona and the No. 13-ranked and host team from Western Oregon will look to stop the Wildcats from repeating as regional champs.
