Wolves blitz Saints in second half to advance to West Region Championship

MONMOUTH, Ore.—After scoring a season-low 21 first half points, No. 3-ranked Western Oregon University used a 3-point barrage after the break to defeat Saint Martin's University, 77-55, in the semifinals of the NCAA DII West Region Tournament on Saturday.

With the win, Western Oregon (31-1) advances to the championship game where it will face California Baptist (27-5). CBU, ranked No. 21 in the latest NABC Coaches' Poll, defeated Azusa Pacific, 72-68, in the first semifinal contest inside the New P.E. Gymnasium.

Western Oregon will carry a 24-game winning streak into the title game. Saint Martin's season ends with a 25-8 overall record. The Saints went 15-4 over their last 19 games with all four losses against Western Oregon, including in the GNAC championship last week in Anchorage.

After shooting 1-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half, the Wolves connected on 8-of-14 after the break with key jumpers coming from leading scorer Demetrius Trammell, who hit 3-of-4 of his attempts from distance in the second half. Eleven of Trammell's points came within a four-minute span beginning at the 12:30 mark.

Trammell's hot stretch coincided with WOU's lead increasing from two points (35-33) to double digits in a matter of moments. His final clinching 3-pointer was launched with 5:12 to play and gave WOU a 19-point advantage.

Tanner Omlid, Vince Boumann and JJ Chirnside added 12 points each to give WOU four players in double figures. Omlid added eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in the winning effort.

Luke Chavez led SMU with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

WOU will be making it second NCAA DII West Region Championship appearance. The Wolves hosted and won the regional tournament two years ago when the team advanced to the national semifinals.
