Wolves hold on for win on senior night

MONMOUTH, Ore.
- The Western Oregon University men's basketball team survived a second half surge by Saint Martin's to earn a 59-56 win on senior night, Thursday, Mar. 4.

The Wolves (12-15, 5-11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) grabbed a 41-26 lead at the half, but saw Saint Martin's (14-12, 4-11 GNAC) put together a 24-3 run in the second half to take its first lead of the game at 52-50, with nine minutes remaining.

The Saints then extended their lead to 54-51 with just under six minutes to play before the Wolves outscored them 8-2 down the stretch to earn the win in the season finale.

Rico Myles scored six of his 13 points during the game clinching run for the Wolves and also had a career-high four blocks. Tarance Glynn recorded his first career double-double in the contest with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Schmidt led the team with 17 points and Kyle Long added 10.

Galen Squires had a game-high 21 points for Saint Martin's, while Blake Poole chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Western Oregon came out firing in the first half and jumped on Saint Martin's with an 11-2 run to start the game. The Wolves would push their lead into double-figures and take a 15-point lead into the locker room (41-26) by scoring the final five points of the period.

For the game, WOU outshot SMU 44-percent to 30-percent from the field, including 51 to 31-percent in the first half. However, the Wolves committed 10 more turnovers (20-10) in the contest to allow the Saints to stay in the game.

The win guarantees Western Oregon at least a share for seventh place in the GNAC. WOU was picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll.
