MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University Hall of Fame will accept three more members into its exclusive club on Friday, Oct. 21, when Jon Carey, Julie Miller and Krista Radetich will all be inducted into the Hall. This will be the seventh induction class in WOU Hall of Fame.
"Out of over one hundred student-athletes, coaches, administrators and teams who were nominated, only three individuals met the rigorous standard of being voted into the prestigious Western Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame," said Western Oregon Athletic Director Daniel Hare. "Jon Carey, Julie McDonald (Miller) and Krista Radetich represent the absolute best of Western Oregon Athletics, and we are all proud of their accomplishments and selection. "
Here is a look at the members of the 2011 class:
Jon Carey: Perhaps the most recognizable figure associated with Western Oregon athletics over the past 36 years, Carey has assumed the role of coach, administrator and leader, and excelled in every area. He served as the Athletic Director of the school from 1993-2010, during which time he led WOU in the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Carey was also the guiding force behind the Wolves capturing the 2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top athletic program in the conference. He began at Western Oregon as an assistant coach on the football team in 1975 and would eventually take over the women's basketball team. During Carey's tenure as the head coach, the Western Oregon women's basketball team reached its 'golden age'. The Wolves won 75 percent of their games during Carey's 16 years at the helm, including reaching the NAIA Championship in 1994. Western Oregon also recorded 13 of their 16 20-win seasons under Carey's leadership and 13 conference titles. Many of the players he coached would go on to lead Western Oregon to back-to-back National titles in 1995 and 1996.
Julie Miller (McDonald): The point guard on the back-to-back National Championship teams, Miller is one of the most decorated basketball players in Wolves' history. She was named to the All-American squad in 1995 and 1996, in addition to earning NAIA All-Tournament honors both years. Fifteen years since Miller last laced up the shoes for Western Oregon she is still atop many of the Wolves' record books. She still holds the school record for assists (743), steals (381), minutes (3,751) and games played (139). She also has the single season record for assists, steals and minutes.
Krista Radetich: A standout performer for the Wolves on the volleyball court, Radetich was a first team All-American selection in 1996 and second team honoree in 1997. She also was a three time all-region selection, including the MVP of the NAIA West Region Tournament. Radetich helped the Wolves reach the National championship tournament in each of her four seasons, and still holds the Western Oregon record for career kills with 2,295 and digs with 2,220. Radetich also had some of the most dominating seasons in school history as she set single season records in kills (692) and placed fifth in digs (584). Radetich's success also extended to the classroom where she was an ESPN Academic All-District selection.
