Wolves win in Fairbanks, 89-85

FAIRBANKS, Alaska
- Four Wolves scored in double-figures to lead Western Oregon to an 89-85 victory at Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (Jan. 22).

Blair Wheadon scored 20 points and dished out six assists to lead the Wolves (10-9, 5-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference). WOU also received 14 points from Kyle Long and 11 from Jordan Freelander, as the starting backcourt trio combined for 45 of the Wolves' 89 points. Kolton Nelson also came through with a team-leading eight rebounds to go along with his 18 points.

Western Oregon trailed by four at the half (47-43) but scored the first seven point of the second period to grab a four point lead. The Nanooks then fought back to take a five-point lead (73-66) with just under eight minutes remaining. The Wolves would answer with a 10-2 run of their own, capped off by a 3-pointer from Long, to take back the lead at 78-75 with 4:25 remaining. WOU would then hit 8-of-9 free throws to seal the four-point victory.

Parrish West scored 34 points on 12-of-20 shooting to pace the Nanooks. Brett Brakman grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and recorded 12 points for a double-double.

Western Oregon was able to control the battle of the boards 39-30, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds. WOU also connected on 12 treys to outscore UAF by 18 points from behind the arc and went 19-of-21 at the charity stripe.

The Western Oregon men's basketball team will return home next week for a pair of GNAC games. They will take on Montana State Billings Thursday (Jan. 27) and Seattle Pacific on Saturday (Jan. 29).
