ARCATA, Calif. -
Melissa Fowler led four Western Oregon student-athletes in double figures with 17 points but the Humboldt State Lumberjacks shot 55 percent from the field to earn a 77-63 win over the Wolves on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Fowler hit 5-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to match her career high with those 17 points.
Jade Haas added 13 points marking her fifth straight game in double figures. The Wolves also got 12 points from
Amber Reade, on 4-of-6 shooting, and 10 from
Rylee Peterson.
Kayla Williams came off the bench to lead Humboldt State with 15 points and nine assists. She was part of the Lumberjacks' reserves which outscored the Wolves' reserves 26-11.
"This was as good of a Division II team as we have played all season," said Western Oregon head coach Greg Bruce.
The game was close for much of the first half but a 15-4 run by the Jacks shortly before the half would give them a 38-27 at halftime. HSU would extend its lead to 13 points with just under 15 minutes remaining but the Wolves would fight back and cut the lead to five on a layup by
Amber Reade with 12:06 remaining. However, the hot shooting of Humboldt State would continue en route to the homecourt victory.
"We played a good team tonight and lost but we had some good individual performances," noted Bruce. "Fowler found her offense a little and was going to the hoop and making it to the free throw line. I also thought
Amber Reade played a good game."
Western Oregon was outrebounded for the first time this season against a Division II opponent, as HSU won the battle on the glass 31-24. The Wolves reached the free throw line 20 times in the game, and converted on 18 of those opportunities.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Wolves (2-7). The win moves Humboldt State to 5-1 on the season.
Western Oregon will now head to Hawaii to take on BYU-Hawaii (Dec. 17) and Hawaii Pacific (Dec. 18).
