MONMOUTH, Ore. – Travis Thompson scored 22 points for the Seawolves as they won 66-55 over the Western Oregon men's basketball team on Thursday, Jan. 19th.
Thompson scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half, as he shot 5-for-5 from behind the arc and 6-for-6 overall.
The loss coupled with a win by Western Washington on Wednesday over Central Washington drops the Wolves (13-4, 6-2 GNAC) into a second place tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with Alaska Anchorage (12-4, 6-2 GNAC) and Seattle Pacific (14-3, 6-2 GNAC).
Kyle Long scored 12 for the Wolves and
Jordan Freelander added in 10 points with
Blair Wheadon contributing 11 points of his own.
Western Oregon's only lead came from the first shot of the game as
James Gehring rolled the ball in for a layup. They would not lead again as UAA would run away with the game.
With 11:23 remaining in the first half, Thompson would lead his team on a 12-0 run as he hit four back-to-back 3-pointers to increase Anchorage's lead to 21-8. The Seawolves would finish out the first half on a 7-0 run, taking a 37-22 lead at intermission.
Western Oregon would chop Alaska Anchorage's lead down to eight (41-33) after a Freelander shot with 14:58 left in the second half, but Kyle Fossman would increase it back up to 13 with a 3-pointer after Liam Gibcus' jumper. The Wolves would not get within single digits again.
The 55 points for Western Oregon was its lowest in an NCAA DII game this season since scoring 53 in the opener against Chaminade.
The Wolves will remain home this weekend for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (Jan. 21).
