ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sasha King had 22 points, seven assists and five steals to lead No. 14 Alaska Anchorage to an 86-58 win over Western Oregon on Thursday, Jan. 19.
King scored the first five points of the game for the Seawolves (16-3, 7-1 GNAC) and they would never trail in the contest.
Rylee Peterson had 18 points to lead the Wolves (4-14, 3-5 GNAC).
Lorrie Clifford also added 13 points, including three treys, as she returned to her home state of Alaska. This was the third straight double figure scoring game for Clifford, and the fourth straight for Peterson. The Wolves hit 50 percent of their 3-pointers in the game (7-of-14) but they were outdone by the Seawolves who hit 9-of-17 from long range.
The Wolves fought hard on the boards against Alaska Anchorage who came into the contest with a +12.4 edge over their opponents on the glass. WOU outrebounded UAA 18-8 in the first half and the teams finished the game tied with 30 rebounds each.
Jade Haas led WOU with seven rebounds.
"We battled them well and I was proud of our efforts against such a physical team," said Western Oregon head coach Greg Bruce. "The score may look bad but we competed well."
Once again turnovers were the Achilles heel for Western Oregon. WOU turned the ball over 30 times compared to just 17 times for UAA.
"I hope we bring the effort that we did tonight against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday," Bruce said. "I've been liking the way we have been playing recently."
The Wolves will close out their road trip to Alaska at Fairbanks on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 4:00 p.m.
