FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska Fairbanks put together a 14-2 run late in the second half to upset the Western Oregon women's basketball team 69-68 on Saturday, Jan. 21.
With the Wolves (4-15, 3-6 GNAC) leading 57-51 and 7:02 left in the game the Nanooks (6-13, 2-7 GNAC) would score on eight of its next nine possessions to take a six point lead with 2:38 left.
The Wolves would cut the lead back to two on a three-pointer by
Lorrie Clifford with 28 seconds remaining. WOU would then foul sending Taylor Altenburg to the line where she sank both free throws to give UAF the four point lead. Western Oregon would push the ball up the court and the ball found its way into
Rylee Peterson's hands for a three-point attempt which came strong off the rim into the hands of Clifford.
She sprinted out to the three-point line and was fouled as her shot circled the rim and just slipped off the rim. She sank her first two free throws and then as she attempted to miss the third it went through the hoop to bring WOU to within one. Western Oregon would try for the steal in the inbounds but would be forced to foul after the ball found the hands of Kelly Logue and her two missed free throws sealed the game.
Clifford led three Wolves in double figures with 17 points. WOU also got 13 from
Melissa Fowler and 11 from
Amber Reade.
Jade Haas came through with 11 rebounds and Peterson added 10 boards. Nicole Hartzog had 18 points for the Nanooks to lead all scorers.
The Wolves will return next week to face Montana State Billings on Thursday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
