SALEM, Ore. – The Western Oregon men's basketball team captured its fourth-straight victory and the Capital City Classic championship with a 74-61 victory over Corban on Saturday night. The victory improved the Wolves to 4-2 on the season while the Warriors fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Andy Avgi led three WOU players on double figures as the forward earned tournament most valuable player honors after scoring 24 points on 10-of-11 from the floor. The freshman also hauled in six rebounds to lead the Wolves.
Jordan Wiley also picked up all-tournament honors after netting 17 points while hitting five three pointers.
Rodney Webster had 13 in the victory as the Wolves shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor.
The Wolves led for a majority of the contest; however, could not build a substantial lead on the Warriors as WOU held a tenuous, 44-43 lead with 13 minutes remaining. WOU would respond with a 16-4 run over the next four minutes; however, to stretch the lead to 60-47.
Corban would be unable to get closer than six the rest of the way as the Wolves captured their third consecutive Capital City Classic title.
The Wolves had another strong defensive effort as Corban shot only 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor. WOU held a decided, 25-13, edge in points on turnovers as the Wolves forced 18 Corban miscues.
Jacob Kopra led four Warrior players in double figures with 17 points as Corban held a 42-33 edge on the boards.
The Wolves will look to extend their win streak to five as WOU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play when it hosts Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:00 p.m.
