Women's Hoops captures Capital City Classic title

The Wolves lead from start to finish as the Wolves claim nine-point win over the Warriors.

SALEM, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team led from start-to-finish as the Wolves defeated Corban, 75-66, to capture the championship of the Capital City Classic on Saturday. The victory was the third in a row for the Wolves as WOU improved to 4-2 on the season with the win while Corban fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Mariah Durian led the way for WOU in the victory with 21 points while Dana Goularte recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The performance earned Goularte tournament most valuable player honors as senior guard Lorrie Clifford was also named to the all-tournament team after posting a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wolves led from the opening tip as WOU built a 21-point lead at 31-10 with just under nine minutes remaining. The Warriors would trail by 14 at the break and managed to cut the lead to six with 11 minutes remaining; however, Corban would be unable to get any closer as the Wolves would claim a nine-point victory.

The Wolves held Corban to just 32.9 percent from the floor and just 25.0 percent from the three-point line as WOU shot 39.7 percent from the field, including 16-of-32 from the field in the first half.

Goularte was close to a triple double as the frontcourt player added six assists and five steals while Katie Goddard came off the bench to score 11 points in 12 minutes of action.

Tara Vanweerdhuizen led Corban in the loss with 12 points and 16 rebounds while Katherine Salness had 14 points for the Warriors.

WOU will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 29, when the Wolves travel to Bellingham, Wash., to face Western Washington at 7:00 p.m. to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
