BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped as the Wolves fell to No. 9 Western Washington, 77-54, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Thursday night. With the loss, WOU falls to 4-3 on the season while the nationally-ranked Vikings moved to 5-0 with the win.
Amber Reade led three WOU players in double-figures with 13 points; however, the Vikings held the Wolves to 21-of-61 from the field (34.4 percent) for the contest.
Dana Goularte added 11 points while
Lorrie Clifford poured in 10 for the Wolves.
Sydney Donaldson led the Vikings with 16 points while Corinn Waltrip, Tishi Williams and Britt Harris each added 12 points in the victory. WWU shot 42.9 percent (30-of-70) from the field as the Vikings held a 36-22 edge in points in the paint.
After WOU held a 10-5 lead to open the game, the Vikings managed to rattle off 10-straight points and eventually built a 27-14 lead midway through the first half. WOU was unable to significantly cut into the lead as WWU would remain perfect on the season with the 23-point win.
The Wolves managed to out-rebound the Vikings, 42-40, as
Whitney Rodriguez led all players with 13 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action.
WOU will look to rebound from the loss as the Wolves return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when they travel to Burnaby, B.C., to take on No. 16 Simon Fraser at 5:15 p.m.
