MONMOUTH, Ore. – After an 11-day break from action, the Western Oregon women's basketball team returns to the court this week as the Wolves travel to face Cal Maritime on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 6:00 p.m., before closing out the week against Academy of Art on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 12:00 p.m.
The Wolves enter the week with a mark of 4-4 on the season after WOU fell to nationally-ranked Western Washington and Simon Fraser two weeks ago. WOU's defense continues to lead the way during the early course of the season as the Wolves rank fourth in the league in field goal percentage defense at 39.0 percent while holding opponents to just 66.6 points per game.
On the offensive side of the ball,
Mariah Durian and
Dana Goularte lead a balanced WOU attack as the frontcourt duo each is averaging 12.8 points per game. Senior guard
Lorrie Clifford is also in double figures for the Wolves, averaging 12.3points per contest. As a team, the Wolves are averaging 63.2 points per game.
Cal Maritime, a NAIA institution and member of the California Pacific Conference, enters the week with a mark of 1-12 overall after falling to Southern Oregon and OIT last week. Javier Brantley leads the Keelhaulers at 13.5 points per game. The meeting with Cal Maritime marks the first in series history between the two schools.
Academy of Art opens the week with a record of 7-2 on the season after a 94-89 victory over Holy Names last week. The Urban Knights are led by Ariel Dale as she leads four players in double figures with 14.0 points per game. As a team, the Knights are holding opponents to 40.5 percent from the floor and 67.6 points per game.
The Wolves are 0-1 all-time against Academy of Art after dropping a 61-59 decision on a neutral court last season.
Following the midweek road trip, WOU will return to action on Monday, Dec. 17, when the Wolves host Simpson at 2:00 p.m.
