LACEY, Wash. – Western Oregon men's basketball team rallied behind four different players scoring in double figures to defeat Saint Martin's, 68-48, on Saturday, Feb. 11th.
Blair Wheadon led the Wolves (16-7, 9-5 GNAC) with 18 points.
Jordan Freelander and
Kyle Long followed with 13 and 12 points each, respectively.
James Gehring added in 10 points and a team-leading six boards.
Western Oregon got revenge from being upset earlier this season when Saint Martin's (8-15, 4-10 GNAC) snapped their nine-game winning streak.
The Wolves jumped on the Saints out of the gate as they built a 17-point lead in the first half thanks to a 14-0 run. They would take a 37-20 lead into the locker room as they shot 60 percent in the first period, compared to just 28.6 percent for the Saints.
In the second half Saint Martin's would fight their way within nine points with 13 minutes left but WOU would go on a 10-2 run and the Saints would never again get within single digits.
Western Oregon outscored SMU 15-6 in points off turnovers and 32-16 in points in the paint.
Roger O'Neill and Jeremy Green both led their team with 13 points each, and Green had a team-high eight rebounds.
Blair Wheadon had two steals on the night moving his career total to 207. Tonight's number also moves him within three steals of tying the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time steals leader, Grant Dykstra, who currently holds the record with 210 steals in his career.
The Wolves will continue their road trip as they get set to head up to square off against Alaska Fairbanks on Feb. 16th at 8:00 p.m.
