MONMOUTH, Ore. – For the first time in nearly four weeks, the Western Oregon men's basketball team returns to action as the Wolves travel to Lacey, Wash., to take on Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Winners of seven-of-eight, WOU enters the contest with a mark of 7-3 on the season, 2-0 in league play, after picking up a victory over Shorter on Dec. 12. The Wolves enter the contest fourth in the league in scoring offense at 80.5 points per game while shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
Freshman
Andy Avgi continues to lead the WOU attack as the forward leads the team and ranks second in the league in scoring at 20.4 points per game.
Devon Alexander is also off to a strong start for the Wolves, averaging 11.7 points per game, as
Jordan Wiley (11.0 ppg) and
Rodney Webster (10.4 ppg) are also scoring in double figures for WOU.
Defensively, WOU continues to rank among the league leaders in turnover margin as the Wolves rank second in the conference with a +4.00 advantage over its opponents. The Wolves rank fourth in the league with 8.7 steals per game as Alexander leads the league with 29steals this season.
Saint Martin's enters the week with a mark of 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league play after a loss to Barry on Dec. 19. Roger O'Neill leads four players in double figures at 14.5 points per game as the Saints are scoring 68.1 points per contest.
Last season, WOU split a pair of contests to Saint Martin's as the Saints lead the all-time series between the two squads is tied, 28-28.
Following the contest against the Saints, the Wolves will travel to Anchorage, Alaska, to face UAA on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7:00 p.m.
