GLENDORA, Calif. – The Western Oregon University men's basketball team used a 14-0 run at the end of the game to seal a 70-65 upset win over seventh-ranked Cal Poly Pomona in the first game of the Cougar Classic hosted by Azusa Pacific University Friday.
The Wolves' (2-1)
Marwan Sarhan scored a team-high 20 points. The junior transfer made five of his 10 shots from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Lewis Thomas added 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made three blocks.
Jordan Wiley chipped in 13 points.
Devon Alexander had three assists and two steals.
"We hung in there defensively and finally finished enough stops," WOU Head Coach
Brady Bergeson said. "I'm proud of the way we executed in that final four minutes."
Western Oregon was held to 37.9 percent shooting from the field, while CPP made 41.4 percent of its shots. The Broncos also outrebounded WOU, 42-33. But, the Wolves committed only nine turnovers to Cal Poly Pomona's 17. Western Oregon turned that advantage into a 25-7 edge in points off of turnovers.
Western Oregon made 23 of its 26 free throws, including 18-of-19 in the second half. The Broncos were 13-for-19 from the free throw line. Both teams struggled from behind the arc, WOU made 3-of-16 while Cal Poly Pomona was 4-for-16.
The Wolves led for the first six minutes, including their largest lead at 11-4, and didn't trail until DeRonn Scott jumper gave the Broncos a 17-16 lead at the 11:13 mark of the first half. Cal Poly Pomona did not lose the lead again in the half and continued its 11-0 run to an eight-point lead with 6:54 left in the half. CPP took a 33-30 advantage into halftime.
Cal Poly Pomona (1-2) scored 17 of the first 23 points in the second half. A Scott lay-in seven minutes into the second half gave the Broncos their largest lead of the game, 54-39. CPP led by 10 points with 7:01 remaining in regulation. A three-pointer by Quentin Taylor gave Cal Poly Pomona a 65-56 lead with 4:27 left, but the Broncos wouldn't score again. The Wolves scored the final 14 points, as CPP went 0-for-4 in the final four minutes and turned the ball over three times. A pair of Thomas free throws with 45 seconds left gave WOU the lead.
Scott scored a game-high 21 points behind 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Taylor added 16 points. Ray Ray Chase grabbed nine rebounds. Scott and Barry Bell both dished out four assists.
Western Oregon plays Cal State-Dominguez Hills (2-2) Saturday in the Cougar Classic. The Toros fell to host, APU, Friday, 92-73. The game will have live video and stats on WOUWolves.com. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
