MONMOUTH, Ore. – Holli Howard-Carpenter picked up her first victory as a collegiate head coach as Western Oregon University women's basketball cruised past Willamette University, 71-46, in the second game of the 2013 Capital City Classic Friday.

"What a great team win, I'm so proud of the way we played today," Howard-Carpenter said. "We had great energy all week and it carried over to this afternoon. Every single player defended tonight and that was the difference in the game, that and the energy and production off the bench. We really played with heart and for one another."

The Wolves (1-3) used a strong defensive effort for their first win of the season. WOU forced the Bearcats into 23 turnovers. Willamette was also held to 34 percent from the field. No Bearcat finished scoring in double digits.

Three Western Oregon players had double-figure scoring led by Dana Goularte's 16 points. The junior made eight of her 13 shots from the field. Jordan Mottershaw added 15 points and Chantel Divilbiss had 13. Divilbiss made three of her five three-point attempts. Melissa Fowler grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Goularte dished out a game-high four assists.

"I started Jordan tonight to defend their point guard and she got it done on the offensive end for us as well," Howard-Carpenter said. "Chantel led us on the defensive end with her intensity and had a great night from the arc."

Willamette led to start the 34th meeting all-time between the programs, but Western Oregon took a 6-5 lead and never surrendered the lead again. A Goularte lay-in at the 4:29 mark of the first half gave WOU its first double digit lead, 31-20. The Wolves had their largest lead in the first half at 39-24. Western Oregon had a 39-26 halftime advantage.

Six minutes into second half, the Wolves had a 50-29 lead after a Katie Goddard lay-in. The final 25-point margin was the largest of the game.

As a team, the Wolves finished 46 percent from the field. Divilbiss' three three-pointers were all WOU made, finishing 3-of-14. Western Oregon was also 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Willamette made 15 of its 44 attempts from the field, 4-of-13 from behind-the-arc, and 12-of-22 from the free throw line. The Wolves had a 31-9 advantage in points off of turnovers, 42-18 edge in points in the paint, and 16-0 lead in fastbreak points.

Julia Brand led the Bearcats (1-4) with nine points. Katie Towry had seven rebounds and two assists.

Western Oregon advances to Saturday's championship game against the California Maritime Academy. CMA (4-5) defeated Corban in overtime in the first game of the tournament. Willamette plays Corban Saturday at 12 p.m. in the third place game. The championship game tips off at 2 p.m. Both Saturday games will have live video and stats on WOUWolves.com.
