Wolves Fight Off Warriors

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University men's basketball team won the 2013 Capital City Classic with a 75-60 victory over Corban University Saturday.

The Wolves (4-3) were paced by the team's first double-double effort of the season by Marwan Sarhan. The junior had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win. He made eight of his 12 attempts from the field, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Teammate Rodney Webster, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring 16 points Saturday, and 15 against Willamette Wednesday. Devon Alexander chipped in 15 points. He and Jordan Wiley both dished out a game-high four assists. Alexander and Mirza Sabic both had two steals.

Western Oregon, which improved to 8-0 in the tournament all-time, limited Corban to 38 percent shooting from the field in the game. WOU made 68 percent of its shots in the second half to help pull away from the Warriors. The Wolves had a slim 32-30 edge on the boards. Both teams took care of the ball, as Corban had just nine turnovers to WOU's seven. Both teams also made eight three-pointers. But, it was Western Oregon that made 56 percent of its shots from the field in the game.

The first six points of the game were scored by WOU. The Warriors rallied and tied the game at 16 with just under eight minutes left in the first half. Less than two minutes later, a Caleb Dozier three-pointer gave Corban its first lead, 21-18. Another Dozier three-pointer a minute later gave CU its largest lead of the game, 24-20. The Wolves closed the half on a 12-3 run and led 32-27 at halftime.

Western Oregon scored 22 of the first 33 points in the second half to pull away and take a 54-36 lead. The Wolves would match their 16-point lead, the largest margin in the game, two more times before the final score. Corban came as close as eight before falling.

The Wolves had a 34-12 advantage in points in the paint, but Corban turned 13 offensive rebounds into a 17-9 edge in second chance points. WOU led 28-16 off of the bench.

The game was an exhibition for the Warriors (3-5). Dozier led Corban with 16 points. Four of his six made baskets were from behind the perimeter. Jordan Carter added 11 points and three assists. Cyrus Ward grabbed seven rebounds.

Willamette's Brandon Luedtke and Avery Manu, and Dozier rounded out the All-Tournament team. Willamette finished the tournament with a loss to Western Oregon and a win over Corban Friday.

The Wolves begin their Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule Thursday at No. 7 Western Washington. The Vikings (4-0) upset No. 1 Metro State in a top-10 matchup Saturday, 72-69. WWU extended its 31-game home win streak with the victory. The last team to beat Western Washington in Bellingham was Western Oregon on Jan. 7, 2012, 83-73.
