HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Western Oregon University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 76-72 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference/PacWest Conference Challenge Saturday.

The Wolves (1-1) shot 50.8 percent from the field in the victory. Adam Hastings made eight of his nine shots from the field. The junior finished with a game-high 17 points. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Marwan Sarhan added 15 points, Rodney Webster scored 14 and Lewis Thomas had 12 points. Devon Alexander dished out five assists.

Western Oregon rallied from a 17-point deficit for the win. The game featured six lead changes and four ties. The Vulcans led 28-11 midway through the first half, but WOU made a 21-6 run to close the gap to two points. The Wolves had the momentum going into halftime after Webster made a three-pointer at the buzzer tying the score at 40.

Hawaii-Hilo built its lead back to six points with 10 minutes left in regulation. A 15-2 WOU run sealed the win for the Wolves, who never trailed again.

Western Oregon made seven of its 16 three-point attempts, and 6-of-16 from the free throw line. The Wolves outrebounded UHH, 45-40. WOU scored 40 points in the paint.

Hawaii-Hilo (1-1) was led by Brandon Thomas' double-double performance. He scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds off of the bench. Thomas made six of his eight shots. Derek Owens added 15 points, while Jamario Clayton and Darnell Williams combined for 26 points. Lucas Swanson threw six assists. Dominique Campbell had four blocks.

The Vulcans forced Western Oregon into 16 turnovers, while committing nine. Hawaii-Hilo was held to 37 percent shooting from the field and 5-of-22 from behind-the-arc. UHH made 17 of its 21 free throw attempts.

The Wolves travel to Azusa, Calif., for the Cougar Classic next weekend. WOU plays Cal Poly Pomona Friday at 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be on WOUWolves.com.
