MONMOUTH, Ore. – In its final home game of the regular season, Western Oregon University's soccer team battled against Seattle Pacific University and nearly pulled off the upset before falling 1-0 Saturday at WOU Soccer Field.

In the 29th minute, WOU's
Amanda Rose Johnson was whistled for a foul in the penalty area as she was coming out to punch a ball away from the attacking Falcons. Isabel Farrell stepped up to the penalty circle for Seattle Pacific and calmly rocketed a shot into the left side of the goal past a diving Johnson, as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening half.
Prior to Farrell's game-winning goal, she had a golden opportunity to score when a header eluded a leaping Johnson and hit off the cross bar before going over the end line in the 21st minute.
Ten minutes after Farrell's goal, she had another chance to add to SPU's lead when her third shot of the afternoon bounced off the post before landing at the feet of Laura Moore, who rocketed a shot high above the goal keeping the game at a one-goal difference.
At the half, Seattle Pacific held a 6-to-4 advantage in shots with Western Oregon earning two corner kicks to SPU's one.
The second half would begin with Seattle Pacific pushing the offense, as the Falcons registered six of the first seven shots that included a golden opportunity by Demi Whatley in the 61st minute. Whatley collected the ball in the box in the midst of a pile of players and unloaded on a shot that flew by Johnson only to be cleared off the line by
Peyton Moon, who was standing next to the right post, to keep Western Oregon within striking distance.
In the 76th minute,
JoEllen DeLeon would register the Wolves' first shot in a 20-minute span as Western Oregon turned the tides over the game's final 15 minutes.
Western Oregon would register the game's final seven shots, as
Vicky Cruz Rosales had a pair of scoring opportunities beginning with a diving header at 77:30 that forced SPU's Alexa Hughes to register her first of three saves in the second half. Just under 10 minutes later, Rosales had another scoring opportunity when she unloaded a shot from 18 yards out that forced Hughes to make another save at 85:52.
Western Oregon's final scoring chances came at 88:39 when
Makana Pundyke ripped a shot from 12 yards out that forced Hughes to make her fifth and final save of the afternoon.
Johnson concluded her final home game in a Wolves' uniform with a pair of saves, while Hughes registered the aforementioned five saves between the pipes for SPU.
