#WOUMBB Extends Streak to Two With Win Over Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Three Wolves scored in double figures, as Western Oregon University's men's basketball team extended its winning streak to two games with a 67-52 victory over Dixie State University Tuesday inside Burns Arena.

Western Oregon (3-2) was led offensively by junior Andy Avgi with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, while senior Marwan Sarhan and junior Jordan Wiley also scored in double figures with 12 points each. Senior Lewis Thomas led the Wolves for the second straight games in rebounds with 10, while junior Julian Nichols chipped in with eight points, a game-high nine assists, three rebounds, and a pair of steals.

For Dixie State (1-1), Zach Robbins registered a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds with DeQuan Thompson also scoring in double figures for the Red Storm with 11 points. Along with Robbins, Mark Ogden also pulled down double figures in rebounds with 11 as Trevor Hill dished out a team-leading two assists for DSU.

"Our toughness prevailed tonight," said Head Coach Brady Bergeson. "We sustained efforts deep into the game. It was those extra efforts that covered up our holes."

The first half began with Western Oregon quickly scoring the opening eight points, as the Wolves held Dixie State without a point over the opening two minutes en route to building an 8-0 lead on a lay-in by Avgi with 18:20 on the clock. Over the next 10 minutes, Western Oregon pushed its lead to double digits (23-12) on another lay-in by Avgi with 8:43 left. Dixie State would use a 10-0 run over a span of five minutes to pull within a single point (23-22) before the Wolves closed out the half on a 9-2 run en route to earning a 32-24 lead at halftime.

Western Oregon began the second by scoring 12 of the first 22 points, as the Wolves extended their lead to 11 points (44-33) on a lay-in by senior Adam Hastings with 14:09 left in the game. Dixie State would get as close as seven points (48-41) with 10:27 on the clock before WOU scored nine unanswered points over a two-minute stretch increasing its lead to 16 points (57-41) on back-to-back free throws by Nichols with 7:38 remaining. Western Oregon would continue to hold its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, as the Wolves secured a game-high tying 16-point lead (67-51) on a lay-in by Sarhan with 94 seconds left. Dixie State would cap the game's scoring, as WOU settled for the 15-point win (67-52).

As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 26-for-59 (44.1%) from the field that included a 7-for-16 (43.8%) performance from beyond the three-point line with the Wolves hitting 6-of-11 (54.5%) from long distance in the first half. WOU was also 8-of-9 (88.9%) at the free throw on the night. On the other hand, Dixie State was a combined 18-for-54 (33.3%) from the field, 0-of-8 from long distance, and 16-of-20 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.

Western Oregon continues its Thanksgiving holiday road trip on Friday, November 28, when the Wolves take on California State University Monterey Bay beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Seaside, California.
