MONMOUTH, Ore. – The University of Alaska-Anchorage women's basketball team raced away from Western Oregon University Monday, 73-47.
The Seawolves (15-6, 8-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) outscored WOU in the second half, 40-21, to pull away with the victory. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but postponed due to inclement weather.
"We did not do anything we talked about at halftime," Western Oregon Head Coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "We didn't make the adjustments in our zone that we needed to make, and we did not rebound. We were just really sluggish in the second half. Our transition defense wasn't there as well. We turned it over 22 times, but they also turned it over 19. We just didn't capitalize on their turnovers."
Alaska-Anchorage remained in the postseason hunt behind three double-digit scorers. Jessica Madison had 15 points, on 6-of-15 shooting from the field. Alli Madison added 12 points, and Kiki Robertson chipped in 11. Kylie Burns grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Robertson and Christina Davis both dished out five assists. Emily Craft made five steals.
The Seawolves finished 40 percent from the field after shooting 47 percent in the second half. UAA controlled the glass, outrebounding Western Oregon, 54-33. Alaska-Anchorage turned 19 offensive rebounds into 13 points. It also scored all 14 fast break points in the game. The Seawolves had a 36-14 edge in the paint.
All six lead changes and four ties happened in the first 10 minutes. The Wolves' largest lead was one point, with their last advantage at 12-11, eight minutes into the contest. With the game tied at 12, Alaska-Anchorage went on a 14-2 run over a six-minute span. WOU answered seven straight points, but would come no closer than five points the rest of the game. UAA had a 33-26 halftime advantage.
The Seawolves' momentum continued in the second half, as they scored 20 of the first 23 points in the first eight minutes of the half. Alaska-Anchorage's largest lead of the game, 61-31, came with 9:23 remaining in regulation.
Dana Goularte led Western Oregon (6-14, 3-9 GNAC) with 14 points, five rebounds, and five blocks. The junior made 10 of her 14 free throws.
Jordan Mottershaw also grabbed five rebounds.
Kelsey Henry made three steals. The Wolves were held to 27 percent shooting from the field, including 5-of-18 from three-point range. They also made 12 of their 19 free throws. WOU was 6-of-26 from the field in the second half.
It was the 21st straight win for the Seawolves over Western Oregon. The last time the Wolves won in the series was a 73-56 win in Anchorage in 2002. UAA has won 27 of the 38 all-time meetings.
Western Oregon travels to Burnaby, B.C., for a matchup with Simon Fraser (14-6, 9-4) Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be on WOUWolves.com.
