BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team held Western Oregon University to 14 points in the first half, en route to a 70-50 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory Thursday.
The Clan (15-6, 10-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) won for the sixth time in the last eight games. SFU's third straight win was also it's fifth consecutive over the Wolves. Simon Fraser remains in second place in the conference standings with only four games left in the regular season.
Western Oregon was limited to five made field goals in the opening half, and could not climb back from there. The Clan's defense stifled WOU to 5-of-23 (21 percent) from the field in the first half. The Wolves finished 34.6 percent from the field in the game, while Simon Fraser shot 40.9 percent. SFU also had a 44-35 edge in rebounds.
After recording a double-double in the first meeting between the teams this season, Rebecca Langmead had another in the second matchup. She finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, making 10 of her 17 shots from the field. The conference's leading scorer, Erin Chambers, matched her 23 point average Thursday. Kia Van Laare added 11 points off of the bench. Marie-Line Petit dished out a game-high six assists.
Less than a month ago, the Clan held off Western Oregon in Monmouth, 56-47. The second meeting was all SFU. The Clan led for nearly 39 minutes, with the Wolves tying the score once, 2-2, for 14 seconds. Leading 18-14 with 7:49 remaining in the first half, Simon Fraser broke the game open with a 21-0 run. SFU held the Wolves scoreless for the final seven minutes of the first half during the run. WOU was 0-for-14 from the field and committed three turnovers in the 10-minute span. The Clan led 35-14 at halftime.
Simon Fraser had its largest lead of the game, 46-20, four minutes into the seconds. The Wolves trimmed the margin to 16 points twice in the second half, but would come no closer. Western Oregon outscored SFU in the second half, 36-35.
Dana Goularte led Western Oregon (6-15, 3-10 GNAC) with 13 points. The junior was 5-of-12 from the field. She also had three steals and two blocks.
Melissa Fowler had a season-high 11 points.
Kelsey Henry also added 11 points off of the bench. Both Fowler and Henry scored nine of their points in the second half. The Wolves missed all nine of their three-point attempts.
"We were not focused and did not come ready to play," WOU Head Coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "We will continue to struggle to win games if we can't put two halves together. I was proud of our second half focus and effort. We were able to outscore them because we took care of the ball and only allowed them five second chances. Melissa (Fowler) was a bright spot tonight; she had a solid stat line and defended well."
The Wolves travel to Western Washington for their next game Saturday. The Vikings, (14-8, 10-4) like Simon Fraser, are receiving votes in the national poll and in second place in the conference standings. WWU also won its third straight game Thursday with a 69-52 home victory over Saint Martin's. Western Washington has won 11 consecutive games against WOU, including the last meeting earlier this season in Monmouth, 78-58. The last Wolves' win was a 65-57 victory at WWU on Feb. 23, 2008. Saturday's tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with live video and stats on WOUWolves.com.
