MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's basketball team used a solid second half to seal a season sweep over the University of Alaska Thursday, 71-59.
The Wolves (6-13, 3-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) entered the game 0-9 when they trailed at halftime this season, but rallied from the 34-29 halftime deficit for the win. WOU, which snapped its five-game losing streak, held the Nanooks to 26 percent shooting from the field in the second half. Alaska made just seven shots from the field in the second half, while committing 15 turnovers.
Western Oregon's
Dana Goularte scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half. She also grabbed 11 of her 12 rebounds in the second half. The junior recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 12th of her career. She was just shy of the sixth triple-double in conference history with seven steals. Her steal total matched a season-best in the GNAC this season. The Port Orchard, Wash. native, made eight of her 17 shots from the field.
Chantel Divilbiss added 16 points, one point away from matching her career-high. Both Goularte and Divilbiss made two blocks.
Elise Miller had two assists.
The Wolves made 35 percent of their shots from the field, but UAF had a better percentage at 39 percent. Western Oregon was 2-of-11 from behind-the-arc and 20-for-31 from the free throw line. The Nanooks were 4-of-17 from three-point range and 5-of-10 from the free throw line.
Alaska, which made nearly 52 percent of its shots from the field in the first half, led for 19 minutes of the opening stanza. The Nanooks' led by five points on multiple occasions through the first 10 minutes of the game. The first half included three ties and one lead change, when WOU took a 19-18 lead for seven seconds. With the score tied at 20 with 7:42 remaining in the first half, the Nanooks went on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game. The Wolves closed within three, before heading into the locker room down five at halftime.
The key stretch of the game was 14-0 run by Western Oregon to open the second half. The Wolves held Alaska scoreless through the first eight minutes of the second half. UAF was 0-for-6 during the stretch with 10 turnovers. WOU coasted from there and had its largest lead of the game, 60-48, with 2:33 remaining in regulation.
Both teams scored 34 points in the paint, but it was WOU that turned the 28 Nanook turnovers into a 30-7 advantage in points off of turnovers. Western Oregon also had a 13-4 edge in second chance points. Alaska outrebounded the Wolves, 41-38.
Jordan Wilson scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half for the Nanooks (9-11, 3-9 GNAC). Kaillee Skjold grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Kelly Logue and Benissa Bulaya both threw three assists. Bulaya made three steals.
The Wolves completed the season sweep over Alaska. WOU beat the Nanooks earlier this season, 81-77, in Fairbanks. It was the seventh straight victory for Western Oregon over UAF in Monmouth.
Saturday, Western Oregon will look to end a 20-game losing streak with Alaska-Anchorage. The Seawolves (14-6, 7-5) are receiving votes in the national poll, but fell at Saint Martin's Thursday, 56-46. UAA eased past the Wolves earlier this season in Anchorage, 97-71.
