LACEY, Wash. – Western Oregon soccer came out victorious on Thursday, defeating Saint Martin's 2-0.
After scoring one goal in each half, the Wolves improved their record to 6-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in GNAC play.
Vicky Cruz Rosales helped the Wolves obtain an early lead within the first 11 minutes of the game. With an assist from
Dacia Alexander, Rosales shot the ball over the goalkeeper's head, scoring her fifth goal of the season.
Shortly after the goal, Saint Martin's (1-10-0, 0-7-0 GNAC) had a chance to tie up the game with a penalty kick, but goalkeeper
Nicole Tejada was able to save the shot.
Both teams constantly looked for the offensive attacks in the first half. The Wolves took seven shots with four on goal, while the Saints took nine shots with five on goal.
Western Oregon added another goal to their lead as
Dani Payne passed the ball for
Machaela Rapozo to finish in the 69th minute. This would be Rapozo's first goal of the season.
The Saints outshot the Wolves for the majority of the game with Abby McFaul leading the charge for the Saints as she had a total of six shots with five on goal. After 90 minutes, Saint Martin's had taken 15 shots, whereas Western Oregon had taken 12.
Rosales and
Shelby Peterson each totaled three shots for the game, while
Taylor Higa had two. Additionally,
Mariah Konyn,
Brooke Steinberg, Payne, and Rapozo each had one shot.
Tejada made a total of 10 saves throughout the match, which is the most amount of saves she has made in one game this season. This win extended Tejada's record to 2-1-0.
Up next, Western Oregon will travel to Concordia in Portland on Saturday, October 17. Their last meeting was just last week on October 6 where Concordia beat the Wolves 2-0 in Monmouth.
