BURNABY, B.C. – Western Oregon soccer finished off their season on a positive note as they took Simon Fraser to double overtime where
Taylor Higa scored the winning goal in the 107th minute on Saturday evening.
While the Wolves played for their final game of the season, the Clan (7-6-2, 5-6-1 GNAC) was still on the hunt for the fourth spot in the GNAC tournament.
The Wolves stuck through the first half as the backline faced 14 shots from the Clan, and Western Oregon's offense took six. In a span of nine minutes, Simon Fraser blasted seven shots, but none of them touched the back of the net.
After a scoreless first half, the Wolves got on the board first as
Brooke Steinberg scored off of a free kick, aiming the ball to the right side of the net and earning her first goal of the season in the 54th minute.
One minute later, the Clan responded instantly as Katelyn Erhardsen took advantage of a loose ball and dribbled it to the goal for the equalizer.
Simon Fraser continued their shooting spree, but Western Oregon was able to give them some trouble as they slightly outshot the Clan in the second half, 9-7.
After 90 minutes, the match remained at a 1-1 tie, forcing the teams to go into overtime. Both teams continued to battle, but the first overtime passed without a goal.
In the second overtime, the Wolves earned a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box. Higa stepped up to the ball and slotted it right past Simon Fraser's goalkeeper, Priya Sandhu, for the game winner. This was Higa's second goal of the season.
Overall, each team took numerous chances at goal as the Wolves had 19 shots, while the Clan had 25.
Vicky Cruz Rosales and
Dani Payne led the team with three shots each for the night, while Higa,
Mariah Konyn, and
Kealakekua Makekau each took two shots.
Goalkeeper
Nicole Tejada made six saves in the first half, and as
Lindsey Mabinuori took over for the remainder of the game, she made five saves.
The Wolves finished the season with an 8-8-1 overall record and a 4-7-1 GNAC record.
