@WOUBaseball Splits Double Header With Nationally-Ranked Lewis-Clark State

LEWISTON, Idaho – Western Oregon University's baseball team split an afternoon doubled header with the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Lewis-Clark State College Saturday at Harris Field, as the Wolves took Game #1, 6-4, before dropping the finale, 8-4.

Western Oregon (3-12) was led offensively by senior Matt Taylor with a combined four hits and three runs batted in, while junior Nathan Etheridge tallied a combined three hits.

Lewis-Clark State's (10-4) middle infielders provided much of the run support, as shortstop Max Whitt drilled two solo homers in the opening game's losing effort, while second baseman Cabe Reiten led the charge with three hits and three RBIs in the second.

GAME #1 — WESTERN OREGON 6, LEWIS-CLARK STATE 4

In Saturday's opener, LCSC's third baseman Michael Sexton added a two-run homer to straightaway center, but despite the firepower the Warriors couldn't make up for four errors and pitching struggles early on.

Western Oregon scored three runs in the first inning thanks to three hits, an error, and a hit batsmen. Taylor had a two-run double in the inning and finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in.

WOU starter Garrett Alvarez went five inning, surrendering five hits and three runs to earn the win. Gary Steindorf pitched the ninth to pick up the save.

LCSC used three arms in the game. Starter Quin Grogan was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in four innings. Adrian Martinez and Cameron Pongs held the Wolves scoreless over the final five frames.

GAME #2 — LEWIS-CLARK STATE 8, WESTERN OREGON 4

In game two, the host Warriors broke up a 1-1 tie with three runs in both the sixth and seventh. The sixth inning scoring was a product of three consecutive singles followed by a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and then a passed ball. In the seventh, LCSC used two singles to capitalize on a walk and a couple of fielding errors.

Along with Reiten, Raymond Pedrina and Julian Ramon tallied multiple hits (two apiece) in game two, while Zach Holley had a hit, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

Dillon Keene pitched 3.2 solid innings in relief to get the win. He struck out five and surrendered just one run. Western Oregon used five pitchers and long reliever Spencer Trautmann took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth.

The two teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday, February 22, as first pitch is set for noon.
