TURLOCK, Calif. – Freshman pinch-hitter
Amy Anderson registered a two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh inning, as Western Oregon University's softball team captured the Consolation #1 title with a 3-1 victory over Academy of Art University in the Wolves' final game at the 14th annual Tournament of Champions presented by Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau Sunday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.
After dropping an extra inning game during pool play against Academy of Art (17-21), Western Oregon (13-20) earned a revenge victory over the Urban Knights to conclude this year's Tournament of Champions for the Wolves.
Western Oregon was led offensively by sophomore
Kelsie Gardner with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate that included two runs scored, while the senior duo of
Amanda Evola and
Jourdan Williams tallied two hits each in the victory. Freshman
Lizzet Dominguez would get the start for WOU allowing an unearned run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work before sophomore
Sammi Cadwallader took the ball for the final 4.0 innings, as she allowed just four hits en route to picking up her second win of the season.
Academy of Art would get two hits each from Elise Oldham and Hallie Curtis, while Haily MacDonald, Taylor Thurman, and Nirana Singh also tallied a hit for the Urban Knights. Brenna Mitchell went the distant for Academy of Art, as she allowed three earned runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work to go along with a game-high five strikeouts.
After a lead off walk by Gardner to start the game, Williams doubled home the Wolves' second baseman two batters later that handed WOU an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Academy of Art would tie the game at 1-1 on a RBI bunt single by Curtis that scored Singh after she reached via a lead off walk before advancing to third on a WOU error and coming home one batter later.
Neither team would score again until the seventh inning, as both teams combined to register six hits.
In the top of the seventh inning, Anderson would drive home the eventual game-winning run after pinch-hitting for sophomore
Emma Alfonso following a single to center field by Gardner. The very next batter – Evola – would bring home the Wolves' insurance run on a RBI single up the middle that scored Anderson and gave Western Oregon a 3-1 lead.
Academy of Art would get a lead off single by Singh in the bottom of the seventh inning and advanced all the way to third with two outs, but Urban Knights could not capitalize as Cadwallader would get the game's final out via a ground out back to the circle as Western Oregon ended the Tournament of Champions with two straight wins.
The Wolves will return to action on Thursday, April 2, in a makeup Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header against Western Washington University beginning at 2 PM on the WOU Softball Field in Monmouth.
NOTE: Thursday's GNAC double header will be Western Oregon's Cancer Awareness games, as the Wolves will honor a large group of people that each player has known that has been effected by the deadly disease.
