@WOUBaseball Completes Weekend Sweep of GNAC Rival Saint Martin's

MONMOUTH, Ore. – A walk-off single with the bases loaded by senior Michael Sherwin in Game #2 helped Western Oregon University's baseball team complete a four-game sweep over Saint Martin's University, 13-4 & 6-5, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Sunday at the WOU Baseball Field.

Western Oregon (21-19, 16-7 GNAC) got four hits from senior Garret Harpole that included a pair of home runs en route to registering a team-high four runs batted in, while five other Wolves – senior Marcus Hinkle, senior Matt Taylor, junior Nathan Etheridge, junior Cody Sullivan, and junior Caleb Falck – each tallied a combined three hits on the afternoon. Falck drove in three runs for WOU, while Hinkle, Taylor, senior Jacob Whisler, and junior Sam Cameron each tallied a pair of RBI for Western Oregon.

Senior Eric Huson would get the start in Game #1 for Western Oregon, as he allowed two earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to junior Garrett Alvarez for the final 3.2 innings where he allowed two earned runs on four hits. Senior Jesse Pratt got the start for the Wolves in the finale, as he allowed five earned runs on six hits with a game-high seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work before junior Jacob Storedahl came in and got the final out despite blowing the save opportunity before earning the victory thanks to Sherwin's game-winning hit that helped secure Storedahl's first win of the season.

Saint Martin's (13-25, 7-15 GNAC) were led offensively by the trio and David Shaw, Chandler Tracy, and Kameron Banister with three hits each, while Tracy registered a team-high three RBI that included a two-run home run in Game #2 to raise his total to a team-best 12 home runs so far this season.

Zach Carter got the start in the opener for the Saints, as he allowed 10 earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to SMU's bullpen that consisted of Trevor Young, Chase DeCoito, Andrei Jankanish, and Ben Shuey that combined to allow three earned runs on seven hits over the final 5.2 innings. Game #2 would see Nick Mailhot get the start, as he allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits before the relief duo of Brad Banker and Torin Dooley held Western Oregon to just two earned runs on five hits with Dooley suffering the loss in the bottom of the seventh inning.

GAME #1 — WESTERN OREGON 13, SAINT MARTIN'S 4

Sunday's opener began with Saint Martin's scoring first, as the Saints loaded the bases in the top of the first inning on a leadoff single by Shaw before back-to-back walks to David Bellamy and Carl Svanevik set up a RBI chance for Tracy. SMU's leading hitter would take advantage of a bases loaded walk that gave the visiting Saints an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Western Oregon began to put runs on the board as the Wolves put up five runs on five hits that included a two-run single by Whisler before Cameron ripped a two-run double down the left field line that put WOU in front by four runs (5-1).

One inning later, Western Oregon added five more runs to its total on four hits with Falck registering a two-run single up the middle before Taylor roped a two-run double down the right field line that extended the Wolves' lead to nine runs (10-1).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Harpole would lead off with a solo home run over the left field fence before junior Cody Poznanski lifted a sacrifice fly into center field two batters later that scored Sullivan following his triple to right center as the Wolves pulled in front by 11 runs (12-1).

Both teams would score single runs in the sixth inning, as Saint Martin's brought home a run on a bases loaded walk by Svanevik to cut the gap to 10 runs (12-2) before Western Oregon pulled back in front by 11 runs (13-2) on a RBI groundout by Hinkle that scored Falck after he led off the Wolves' at-bat with a single.

Neither team would score in the seventh inning, as Saint Martin's added two more runs to its total in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI single by Shaw before he was thrown out in a rundown two batters later that ended the inning after Kaelen Hirashiki scored the Saints' fourth and final run of the opener for the final score of 13-4 in favor of the home team.

Falck led Western Oregon with a perfect 3-for-3 showing at the plate with three RBI, while Harpole also tallied three hits with three runs scored and a run batted in. Sullivan and Etheridge were the only other Wolves to tally two-or-more hits, while Sullivan also scored a team-high tying three runs for WOU.

Shaw, Tracy, and Jake Huskey led Saint Martin's with two hits each, while Shaw, Tracy, and Svanevik tallied the only RBI for the Saints in Game #1.

GAME #2 — WESTERN OREGON 6, SAINT MARTIN'S 5

Sunday's finale would begin with Western Oregon scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Hinkle before Poznanski stole third and came home on a throwing error by Saint Martin's that put the Wolves in front 2-0 after two innings of play.

In the top of the third inning, Saint Martin's got a two-out single up the middle by Svanevik before Tracy belted his team-leading 12th home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

Wasting little time in retaking the lead, Western Oregon would get a three-run home run off the bat of Harpole in the bottom of the third inning that also scored Etheridge and Sullivan after the duo reached via a single and walk to open the Wolves' at-bat as WOU pulled back in front by three runs (5-2).

Over the next three innings, Pratt and Saint Martin's bullpen would face off in a pitcher's dual with neither team scoring until the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Saint Martin's took advantage of back-to-back singles by Shaw and Bellamy before Tracy was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases. After a hit-by-pitch to Huskey pulled the Saints within two runs (5-3) as well as a pitching change by Western Oregon, Banister ripped a two-run single to left field that tied the game at 5-5.

Western Oregon would strike quickly in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Sullivan led off with a double to center field before Harpole was intentionally walked and Falck drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Sherwin would then step to the plate and took a 3-1 pitch back up the middle that was knocked down by SMU's diving second baseman, but would deep enough to allow Sullivan to score and handed the Wolves a 6-5 walk-off victory that extended WOU's home winning streak to 11 games.

Hinkle and Taylor led Western Oregon's offense with two hits each, while Harpole registered a team-high three RBI for the Wolves.

Saint Martin's was led offensively by Svanevik and Banister with two hits each, while Tracy and Banister tallied a pair of RBI for the SMU.

Western Oregon returns to the diamond on Friday, April 17, when the Wolves open a five-game series against Montana State University Billings starting with a suspended game from mid-March beginning at 1 PM MT at Dehlar Park in Billings, Montana.

NOTE: The Wolves and Yellowjackets will play a seven-inning game following by the first nine-inning game of the weekend on Friday, as both teams will play back-to-back seven-inning games on Saturday before concluding the series with a nine-inning game on Sunday.
