@WOUSoftball Spoils Senior Day for Simon Fraser With Record-Breaking Performance

BURNABY, B.C. – Western Oregon University's softball team scored a single-game record 16 runs in the top of the sixth inning of Game #1, as the Wolves sent a single-game record 21 batters to the plate in WOU's sweep over Simon Fraser University, 21-4 & 6-5, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Senior Day Sunday at Beedie Field.

Western Oregon (18-23, 10-6 GNAC) was led by sophomore Kelsie Gardner with a combined 7-for-9 performance that also included a team-high tying five runs batted in, while sophomore Ashlee Lynch also tallied six hits on the afternoon that included her first home run of the season en route to registering five RBI. Senior Amanda Evola recorded four hits with sophomores Emma Alfonso and Lexi Jennings getting three hits each in the double header.

Game #1 would see senior Jourdan Williams go the distance allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts en route to picking up her sixth win of the year, while junior Alyson Boytz and sophomore Sammi Cadwallader combining to get the win in the finale as the duo allowed four earned runs on seven hits.

Simon Fraser (16-26, 5-15 GNAC) was led offensively by Kaitlyn Cameron with a combined three hits, while Danielle Raison, Stefanie Sheard, and Robyn Mogavero each had two hits on the afternoon for the Clan. Taylor Lundrigan and Sheard drove in a team-high two RBI each for SFU with Cameron and Sheard scoring a team-leading two runs each for the home team.

In Game #1, Alia Stachoski got the start for the Simon Fraser as she allowed 19 earned runs on 19 hits in 5.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to the duo of Meghan Malkowich and Kendra Goodman for the final two outs with the pair allowing two earned runs on three hits. The finale would see Jessica Goulet get the start for SFU, as she allowed four earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work before Kelsie Hawkins got the final three outs for the Clan despite allowing one earned run on two hits.

GAME #1 — WESTERN OREGON 21, SIMON FRASER 4

The opener on Sunday would be a pitcher's dual over the first three innings before Western Oregon scored five runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning that included a two-run home run over the left field fence by Alfonso that immediately followed a two-run single by Gardner, as the Wolves jumped in front by five runs (5-0).

Simon Fraser would answer back with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Lundrigan brought the Clan within two runs (5-3) on a two-run double down the left field line that scored both Mogavero and Sheard.

That would as close as SFU would get, as Western Oregon put together a record-breaking performance in the top of the sixth inning when the Wolves sent the aforementioned 21 batters to the plate and scored 16 runs on 15 hits that included nine run-scoring hits with the big one coming off the bat of Lynch via a two-run home run over the left center field fence., Evola and sophomore Ashley Radziuk each registered three RBI in the inning, while Gardner, Alfonso, and Lynch each tallied a pair of RBI for the Wolves.

After the record-breaking performance by Western Oregon, Simon Fraser added its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run-scoring double by Sheard for the final score of 21-4 in Game #1.

Gardner led the Wolves' offense with five hits and four RBI, while Lynch added four hits and three RBI. Alfonso, Evola, and Jennings each tallied three hits with Evola and Radziuk tying Lynch's three-RBI performance in the opener.

Simon Fraser would get two hits from Cameron, while Lundrigan led the Clan with a pair of RBI.

GAME #2 — WESTERN OREGON 5, SIMON FRASER 4

After the firework performance in Game #1 by Western Oregon, the Wolves would strike first by scoring three runs in the top of the second inning on RBI hits by Lynch, sophomore Destiny Kuehl, and Gardner as WOU took an early 3-0 lead.

Simon Fraser would strike back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Cameron, Raison, and Nicole Ratel each recorded RBI hits to put the Clan in front by a single run (4-3).

Western Oregon would answer back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Williams and Lynch recorded RBI singles to put the Wolves in front 5-4 with Lynch's eventual game-winning hit scoring Jennings after she reached via an error by SFU.

Simon Fraser would threaten to score the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Raison registered a two-out single before she advanced to third on a double by Alex Baylek. That would be as close as the Clan would get, as Western Oregon's Cadwallader stepped up her pitching and induced a game-ending pop out to first base en route to earning the save that helped the Wolves secure the 5-4 victory and kept WOU in the GNAC playoff picture with two weekends left in the regular season.

Gardner and Lynch led Western Oregon with a pair of hits, while Lynch also tallied a team-high two RBI for the Wolves.

Seven different Simon Fraser players tallied hits in the finale with Sheard driving in a pair of runs for the Clan.

Western Oregon returns to action on Friday, April 17, when the Wolves begin the final home weekend of the season against GNAC-leading Saint Martin's University starting at 2 PM on the WOU Softball Field in Monmouth.
