Jourdan Williams pitched a complete game in the finale to go along with a combined four hits by sophomore
Kelsie Gardner, as Western Oregon University's softball team split a Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header against rival Saint Martin's University dropping the first game, 9-5, before coming back with a 6-1 victory in Game #2 Saturday at the SMU Softball Field.
Western Oregon (15-22, 7-5 GNAC) would get three hits from Gardner in Game #1 before she added another hit in the finale, while Williams added a combined three hits to go along with a two-hit performance in Game #2 by freshman
Zoe Clark.
Junior
Alyson Boytz went the distance in Game #1 allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings of work to go along with a game-high five strikeouts, while Williams went the distance in Game #2 allowing one earned run on seven hits en route to collecting the victory to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Saint Martin's (28-14, 8-2 GNAC) would get a 5-for-5 combined performance from Alyssa Slate, while Sam Munger tallied a combined four hits to go along with a pair of runs scored and four runs batted in with Slate registering two RBI to go along with three runs scored in the Saints' victory in Game #1.
Munger also went the distance in the opener allowing five earned runs on seven hits en route to earning her 15th win of the season, while Lindsay Miller went the opening 0.1 innings of Game #2 as she allowed three earned runs on four hits before being lifted for Kim Nelson for the final 6.2 innings of the finale.
GAME #1 — SAINT MARTIN'S 9, WESTERN OREGON 5Saturday's opener would begin without either team scoring until the bottom of the second inning when Saint Martin's broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run by Slate before Western Oregon pulled within a single run (2-1) on a RBI single by senior
Amanda Evola in the top of the third inning.
The Wolves would tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning when junior
Elaine Sperry drove home Clark with a RBI double to left field.
Unfortunately that would be as close as Western Oregon would get, as Saint Martin's tallied five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning with Munger driving in a pair of runs on a single to right field that extended SMU's lead to 7-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, sophomore
Lexi Jennings would register her first of two home runs on the afternoon with a two-run long ball over the right center field fence that also scored Williams to pull Western Oregon within three runs (7-4).
Saint Martin's would cap its scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Munger and Jenkins drove in base runners to extend SMU's lead to 9-4.
Western Oregon's final run would come in the top of the seventh inning when Williams registered a RBI single down the right field line to bring home Gardner, as the Wolves could not get any close and settled for the heart-breaking 9-5 loss.
Gardner led the Wolves' offense with three hits, while Jennings drove in a pair of runs via her second home run of the season.
Munger and Slate combined to register four of Saint Martin's nine hits, as the duo also combined to drive in five of the Saints' eight RBI.
GAME #2 — WESTERN OREGON 6, SAINT MARTIN'S 1In Saturday's finale, Western Oregon jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single up the middle by sophomore
Ku'ulei Siolo before Jennings brought home Williams on a fielder's choice as the Wolves earned a 3-0 lead after their opening at-bat.
Saint Martin's would get its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Munger before Jennings belted her team-high tying third home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning that pushed Western Oregon's lead to 4-1.
The Wolves would add their final two runs in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore
Emma Alfonso scored on an error before Clark drove home Gardner with an infield single that pushed Western Oregon's lead to a final score of 6-1.
Williams and Clark led WOU's offense with two hits each, while Siolo and Jennings drove in a pair of runs each for the Wolves.
Slate was a perfect 3-for-3 for Saint Martin's, while Munger added two more hits for the Saints.
Western Oregon will return to action on Saturday, April 11, in a GNAC double header against Western Washington University beginning at noon in Bellingham, Washington.
