Brandon Oliver helped Western Oregon University's baseball team extend its season, as the Wolves advanced to the championship round of the 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships with a 4-3 win over No. 1 seed Montana State University Billings Thursday at Dehler Park.
Western Oregon (27-23) was led by senior
Marcus Hinkle with three hits in five at-bats, while Oliver and senior
Garret Harpole each tallied a pair of hits for the Wolves. Harpole would also account for half of WOU's run with a pair of RBI, while Oliver and senior
Austin Hamilton tallied the Wolves' other two RBI in the come-from-behind victory.
GNAC Pitcher of the Year
Jesse Pratt got the start for Western Oregon, as he allowed three earned runs on six hits over the first 7.0 innings to go along with a game-high eight strikeouts before turning the ball over to junior
Shawn Domke for the final 3.0 innings. Domke would allow just one hit in relief, as he struck out four batters en route to picking up his second win of the season.
Montana State Billings (27-23) would get two hits each from Kevin Toon and Trevor Nix, while three other Yellowjackets – Myles Berkram, Brody Miller, and Corey Morris – accounted for MSUB's other three hits. Toon would register Montana State Billings' lone RBI on the night.
Jake Campeau would get the start for MSUB, as he allowed three earned runs on seven hits over the opening 7.0 innings before Adam Cox came out of the 'Jackets' bullpen for the final 3.0 innings, Cox would allow one earned run on four hits with four K's but suffered the loss just his second of the season.
In the top of the second inning, Western Oregon would score first in a run-scoring double to left field by Harpole that scored senior
Michael Sherwin all the way from first after he drew a two-out walk just before Harpole's RBI hit that handed the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.
One inning later, Western Oregon added to its lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hamilton that scored senior
Jacob Whisler after he lead off double. Hamilton's fly out to center field came on the heels of a bunt single by Hinkle that moved Whisler to third before the Wolves' senior second baseman trotted home to score WOU's second run of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Montana State Billings would cut Western Oregon's lead in half pulling within a single run (2-1) when Toon scored on a balk four batters after he reached via an infield single to lead off the 'Jackets' at-bat.
One inning later, MSUB would take advantage of three WOU errors with Toon bringing home the tying run on a RBI single to center field that scored Casey Merritt before Berkram came home on a miscue by the Wolves that put the Yellowjackets in front by a single run (3-2).
Two innings later, Western Oregon would tie the game at 3-3 when Harpole sent a seeing-eye single up the middle that allowed Oliver to score from second base after he led off with a double to right field.
Neither team would score again in regulation, as Western Oregon threatened to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning when the Wolves loaded the bases with no outs only to come away empty handed following back-to-back superb defensive plays by MSUB's Morris that kept the game tied.
In the top of the 10th inning, Western Oregon would sandwich back-to-back walks by Hamilton and Taylor around a pair of strikeouts before Oliver cued a single through the left side to score the eventual game-winning run in the form of Hamilton to put the Wolves in front by a single run (4-3).
Montana State Billings would have one last chance to extend its season, as Nix ripped a one-out double down the right field line only to watch Western Oregon induce a pair of ground outs to end the Yellowjackets' season.
Western Oregon will now move onto the first of potentially two championship games tomorrow – Friday, May 8 – beginning at 11:30 AM (MST) at Dehler Park against unbeaten Northwest Nazarene University, as the Wolves will need to defeat the Crusaders twice in order to capture the GNAC Championship trophy.
