NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon soccer team had their lead stolen away twice, ending in a 2-2 tie against Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.
The Wolves (4-3-1, 0-2-1 GNAC) came out fighting and put a point on the scoreboard by the 13th minute of the game.
Vicky Cruz Rosales picked up her fourth goal of the season after
Taylor Higa launched a corner kick into the 18-yard box. A failed Crusaders (4-3-1, 1-1-1 GNAC) attempt to clear the ball left a loose ball for Rosales to finish.
The offensive battle did not stop there. By the 17th minute, Western Oregon had already taken six shots at goal.
Northwest Nazarene retaliated just before the first half ended when Rachel Ball scored, evening the match at 1-1.
Unsatisfied with the tied game, Western Oregon regained the lead in the 54th minute. Higa sent a corner kick into the box once again where
Dani Payne took advantage of the loose ball to score the Wolves' second goal.
Just when the Wolves thought they were home free with the victory, Northwest Nazarene's Lexi Fesenbek battled through the Wolves' defense and scored the equalizer a minute before the end of regulation.
Within both overtime periods, Western Oregon had four shots, while Northwest Nazarene had one. Because neither team earned the victory, the Wolves are still fighting for their first GNAC win.
Overall, Western Oregon outshot the Crusaders, 14-10, and nine of the Wolves' shots landed on goal. Higa had a total of six shots with four of them on target.
Mariah Konyn also took three, and Rosales had two.
Both goalkeepers had to do some work as
Lindsey Mabinuori made five saves, while Northwest Nazarene's Daniele Ortiz made seven.
The Wolves will return home to face Central Washington on Saturday, October 3.
