PUEBLO, Colo. – Sometimes the bounces go your way.
Â
After suffering a tough overtime loss on Sunday, the Western Oregon soccer team rebounded – literally and figuratively – nicely to post its second shutout of the year. Posting a goal in each half, WOU defeated New Mexico Highlands, 2-0, on Tuesday in a neutral site match.
Â
Upperclassmen led the way for Western Oregon in the win, as
Allison Sprecher and
Vicky Cruz Rosales netted the pair of goals in the game. Sophomore keeper
Lindsey Mabinuori made two saves in recording her second clean sheet of the season.
Â
Sprecher cashed in a rebounded shot of the post in the 42
nd minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead heading into half time.
Â
The physical match saw four yellow cards and one NMHU red card, handed out in the 51
st minute. WOU did not waste much time taking advantage of the man advantage, as Rosales fired in her third goal of the year with an assist from
Mariah Konyn.
Â
New Mexico Highlands (1-2) had two good looks in the final minutes, but one sailed high while Mabinuori blocked away the second. Western Oregon held the match's overall shot advantage at 12-10.
Â
The victory improves the Wolves' records to 2-1 with one more match still left on its current road trip. Next stop is Lakewood, Colo. on Thursday for a match with the Cougars of Colorado Christian. The kick is set for 11:30 a.m. MT.
