INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's soccer team showed great energy and resolve, but could not find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss Thursday to Seattle Pacific in GNAC action at Panther Stadium.

The Wolves (5-11-1, 2-9-1 GNAC) came out in the opening 10 minutes with vigor and intensity. Junior
Meli Cortez fired a shot in the second minute that was deflected away by SPU keeper Molly Stinson. Seven minutes later, Cortez found open space inside the 18-yard box and fired a hard shot that was redirected by a Falcon defender.

Seattle Pacific (9-3-4, 6-2-3 GNAC) notched the first of their goals in the first half in the 17 minute. A hard pass from Maddie Sjothun ricocheted off a WOU backline player to Kelly Gould, who converted a 12-yard shot toward the right post past freshman keeper
Caitlin Kastelic.

In the 33
rd minute, Julia DeVere got on the end of a long pass to the middle of the field from Sydnee Smith and fired a shot inside the right post to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves controlled much of the offense in the second half, holding an 11-2 edge in shots. Numerous attempts from Cortez and freshman
Kaili Brundage were turned away by Stinson. Junior defender
Kai Mahuka came within inches of netting a goal in the 79
th minute when her high shot bounced off of Stinson's hand and off the crossbar. The final attempt of the match came from senior
Mariah Konyn in the 85
th minute.

Stinson made seven saves to earn the win for the Falcons. Kastelic took the loss for the Wolves after making four saves.
