Cougars upend Wolves, 82-71

GLENDORA, Calif. – Junior guard Bryan Berg came off the bench for five 3-pointers and a team-high 17 points, but Azusa Pacific shot 50.9 percent from the field and got a career-high 34 points from Petar Kutlesic to defeat the Western Oregon men's basketball team, 82-71, Friday night at Citrus College.

Berg, Ali Faruq-Bey (11) and JJ Chirnside (10) all reached double figures in the scoring, but the Wolves (4-6) never led in the game despite cutting a double-digit down to two points at the 14:26 mark of the second half. Azusa Pacific (6-7) went on an 8-0 run immediately to build the lead back to 10 and never looked back.

Western Oregon shot 40 percent for the game and made 9-of-32 3-pointers, but the Wolves' defense could not contain the Cougars on the other end of the court. APU shot 59 percent in the second half, led by Kutlesic's six makes on eight attempts.

Berg had his own strong showing from long range, sinking 5-of-10. Faruq-Bey had nine of his 11 points in the second half, including a pair of triples. Chirnside had his best game of the year with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes in a reserve role.

Tanner Omlid added nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and three assists. Evan Garrison and Malik Leaks each finished with eight points.

Joining Kutlesic as leading scorers for APU was Joey Schriber with 17 points, while Corey Langerveld and Conner Peterson each finished with 11 points.
