PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Oregon baseball shutout Saint Martin's, 9-0, in the first half of the Saturday doubleheader, but drop, 5-4, in the second at the Joe Etzel Field.
The Wolves are now 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the Saints are 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Due to inclement weather on Western Oregon's baseball field, both teams met at the University of Portland to play the scheduled games.
GAME #1 – WESTERN OREGON 9, SAINT MARTIN'S 0Western Oregon opened the first game with a handful of runs, scoring five in the bottom of the first inning. Junior
Brock Pradere started the Wolves off as he reached on a fielding error, and while senior
Brandon Oliver's double advanced Pradere to third base, it was a fielding error from Saint Martin's that eventually brought him home. Oliver scored on the next play when senior
Nathan Etheridge reached on a throwing error.
Podratz and Etheridge ran home after senior
Cody Sullivan doubled down the left field line. Sullivan earned the fifth run when senior
Kyle Vanderkin singled.
The Wolves scored another run in the fourth inning as redshirt sophomore
Jay Leverett drove a double down the left field line, and Oliver's single brought Leverett home.
Western Oregon earned their last three runs in the eighth inning. Oliver and Leverett each scored their second run when senior
Caleb Falck doubled to left field. Falck then scored as Etheridge reached on a throwing error.
The Wolves totaled 12 hits, while the Saints had four, and Sullivan led the Wolves with three.
Sophomore
Brady Miller earned his third win after pitching seven innings, allowing two hits, and striking out three batters. Freshman
Jacob Fricke also appeared in two innings and struck out three.
GAME #2 –WESTERN OREGON 4, SAINT MARTIN'S 5In the second game of the doubleheader, the Wolves led, 4-1, for the majority of the game until the sixth and seventh innings, where Saint Martin's made a comeback.
Similar to the first game, Western Oregon started off with three runs in the first inning. Oliver's double allowed Pradere to score the first run, and Oliver came home off of Etheridge's single. Etheridge then scored off of Vanderkin's double.
While the Saints earned a run in the top of the second, the Wolves added to their lead in the bottom when junior
Forrest Garcia drove a home run to right field.
In the sixth, the Saints cut into Western Oregon's lead with one run, and the seventh inning involved a three-run rally to take the victory.
Senior
Darrien Moran started off on the pitcher's mound for the first six innings, allowing four of Saint Martin's seven hits and striking out seven batters. However, junior
Elias Bedolla finished off the final inning and earned his second loss. Bedolla struck out two batters.
Western Oregon matched the Saints with seven hits. Garcia had a single along with his home run, while Podratz and Pradere each added singles to the mix.
The Wolves are scheduled to play Saint Martin's for a second doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the University of Portland.
