WOU baseball splits against Saint Martin’s

PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Oregon baseball shutout Saint Martin's, 9-0, in the first half of the Saturday doubleheader, but drop, 5-4, in the second at the Joe Etzel Field.

The Wolves are now 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the Saints are 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Due to inclement weather on Western Oregon's baseball field, both teams met at the University of Portland to play the scheduled games.

GAME #1 – WESTERN OREGON 9, SAINT MARTIN'S 0
Western Oregon opened the first game with a handful of runs, scoring five in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Brock Pradere started the Wolves off as he reached on a fielding error, and while senior Brandon Oliver's double advanced Pradere to third base, it was a fielding error from Saint Martin's that eventually brought him home. Oliver scored on the next play when senior Nathan Etheridge reached on a throwing error.

Podratz and Etheridge ran home after senior Cody Sullivan doubled down the left field line. Sullivan earned the fifth run when senior Kyle Vanderkin singled.

The Wolves scored another run in the fourth inning as redshirt sophomore Jay Leverett drove a double down the left field line, and Oliver's single brought Leverett home.

Western Oregon earned their last three runs in the eighth inning. Oliver and Leverett each scored their second run when senior Caleb Falck doubled to left field. Falck then scored as Etheridge reached on a throwing error.

The Wolves totaled 12 hits, while the Saints had four, and Sullivan led the Wolves with three.

Sophomore Brady Miller earned his third win after pitching seven innings, allowing two hits, and striking out three batters. Freshman Jacob Fricke also appeared in two innings and struck out three.

GAME #2 –WESTERN OREGON 4, SAINT MARTIN'S 5
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Wolves led, 4-1, for the majority of the game until the sixth and seventh innings, where Saint Martin's made a comeback.

Similar to the first game, Western Oregon started off with three runs in the first inning. Oliver's double allowed Pradere to score the first run, and Oliver came home off of Etheridge's single. Etheridge then scored off of Vanderkin's double.

While the Saints earned a run in the top of the second, the Wolves added to their lead in the bottom when junior Forrest Garcia drove a home run to right field.

In the sixth, the Saints cut into Western Oregon's lead with one run, and the seventh inning involved a three-run rally to take the victory.
