Saints rise above

WOU softball drops road games at SMU

LACEY, Wash. – Making up for games lost to wet conditions two and half weeks ago, Western Oregon traveled to GNAC-leading Saint Martin's Tuesday and dropped both games of a twinbill, 7-2 and 6-4.

The Wolves have dropped their last three games after a three-game winning streak. WOU is now 10-13 overall and 3-5 in GNAC play, while Saint Martin's improves to 21-4 on the year and 6-2 in conference action.

SMU brought plenty of offense early in Wednesday's doubleheader. The Saints plated five runs on three hits in the first inning to set the pace.

Western Oregon got on the board in the third inning with a two-out, solo home run from junior Destiny Kuehl, her sixth on the season. In the top of the seventh inning, sophomore Zoe Clark singled in the leadoff role and later scored on a fly ball error with two outs.

Senior Alyson Boytz took the game one loss, falling to 4-4 on the year. In her complete game effort, she allowed six runs on seven hits, while striking out two.

Kuehl led the Wolves with two of the team's four hits in the first game.

Another big inning, this time in the second, allowed the Saints to take a 6-0 lead in game two.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior Lexi Jennings lined a two-run double to right center field to cut the SMU lead to 6-2. The WOU rally continued into the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Stephanie Franco jump started a two-out rally with a single that was followed by Kuehl reaching base on an error and senior Brandy Knowles being hit by a pitch. On the first pitch, Clark doubled to left field to cash in two runs.

Despite the late rush, WOU could not cap the comeback after a pop-up closed out the game.

Sophomore Lizzet Dominguez dropped to 2-5 in the circle. She gave up five runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings pitched. Junior pitcher Sammi Cadwallader surrendered one hit and struck out two in 4.2 relief innings.

Clark went 4-for-4 with a run and two RBI in game two. Seven other WOU players each added one hit to total 11 for the game.

Western Oregon will host Central Washington for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 25 on Field 5 at Hillsboro Stadium Softball Complex.
