Walkoff Wizard

Jennings swings WOU to DH sweep, Sargent earns 300th coaching win

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Junior infielder Lexi Jennings was the heroine of the day. She had walkoff hits in both games of Saturday's GNAC doubleheader to lead Western Oregon University to a sweep of league-leading Saint Martin's University, 4-2 and 4-3 (8), at the Hillsboro Stadium Softball Complex.

The wins puts Western into a four-way percentage tie for fourth place in the GNAC, improving them to 13-14 overall and 6-6 in league play. Also in victory, WOU head coach Lonny Sargent notched his 300th career managerial win.

Saint Martin's saw a four-game winning streak snapped to fall to 23-6 overall and 8-4 in conference action.

In the opener, the starting pitchers – WOU's Alyson Boytz and SMU's Loryn Williams – each kept the opposing team to one hit through the first five innings. It was not until the sixth inning when the long ball allowed the clubs to get on the scoreboard.

Kim Wilson drove in two with a laser shot home run to right field for a 2-0 lead. The advantage held for just a half inning. With two outs, Emma Alfonso singled up the inning to extend the frame for Destiny Kuehl. After fouling off the first pitch, Kuehl got a hold of Williams' pitch and deposited it over the wall in left to tie the game.

Western Oregon scored if final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ashley Lynch led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Stephanie Franco. After a groundout advanced pinch-runner Courtney Lau Hee to third, Jennings lifted the second pitch she saw deep to left field. SMU's Lindsay Miller backed up all the wall to the wall, but ran out of room as the ball fell to the ground for the game-winning home run.

The Wolves' game-one offensive attack totaled six hits. Boytz earned the win in the circle scattering three hits and striking out five.

In game two, the offenses came alive earlier than the preceding contest. Saint Martin's scored twice in the second inning off WOU starter Sammi Cadwallader.

WOU matched the Saints with two runs of their own in the fifth inning. Leadoff singles from Jennings and Ryanne Huffman put the Wolves into a position to be aggressive on the base paths. On a low pitch in the dirt, both runners broke toward their next bases. Jennings got to third on an errant throw from the catcher and scored thanks to the miscue. Two batters later, Huffman scored on Destiny Huehl's RBI groundout to shortstop.

The rain in Oregon intensified as the game progressed in to extra innings. Saint Martin's took the lead in the eighth when a short throw aimed at third base for a force out squirted into the outfield.

WOU's answer materialized in the bottom half of the eighth. Brandy Knowles drew a walk and her pinch runner, Jenna Kelly, advanced to second on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Ashlee Lynch. Alex Frazier followed with a single and advanced to second base on the throw home to keep Kelly from scoring. The bags loaded after Mercedes Green was intentionally walked for Jennings. She flared a 1-1 pitch to center field easily scoring Kelly while Frazier slid in just ahead of the throw to seal the Wolves' win.

Lizzet Dominguez threw three innings of relief and earned the win after allowing an unearned run on three hits. The Wolves had 12 hits in the game with four players – Knowles, Lynch, Frazier and Jennings – each having two hits.

Western Oregon will play out of conference games beginning next Friday in the 15th Annual Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock. WOU opens round-robin play against San Francisco State University from the CCAA and Dominican University of California on April 1.
