MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University baseball continued its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep over Concordia University to earn a series sweep of the Cavaliers on Sunday.
Â
WOU won the first game 10-0 behind a complete-game shutout from
Darrien Moran and took the finale 6-3 in a game that saw both teams go for 10 hits each.
Â
The Wolves have won eight consecutive games overall to improve to 18-13 overall and 13-8 inside the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. CU fell to 10-22 on the year and 8-14 in league action.
Â
Moran scattered nine hits in Sunday's first game, but struck out seven in his shutout performance. He was aided by three double plays turned behind him by the WOU infield. The win evened the southpaw's record to 3-3.
Â
Offensively,
Erik Long went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and
Trevor Podratz had two doubles in his 3-for-4 game.
Â
Jake Brewer took the loss for Concordia surrendering six runs on six hits over four innings.
Â
In game two, the Wolves took a 4-0 lead after three innings with homers from Podratz in the second inning and
Cody Poznanski in the third. Podratz added a RBI single later in the third frame for the cushion.
Â
Gary Steindorf pitched solidly on the mound in game two of the doubleheader for his second win of the season. He scattered four hits over the first four innings before running into a jam in the CU half of the fifth. A two-run triple and RBI groundout cut the WOU lead to one run before
Elias Bedolla got the call from the bullpen. The reliever induced a pair of ground outs to end the rally.
Â
WOU immediately answered with a pair of RBI singles from
Brandon Oliver and
Nathan Etheridge to build the lead to 6-3.
Â
Bedolla allowed single hits in the sixth and seventh inning to close out the game and earn his third save of the year.
