LACEY, Wash. – The second-seeded Wolves used a pair of solo home runs in support of a two-hit shutout thrown by senior
Alyson Boytz, as Western Oregon advanced to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship game with a 4-0 victory over Saint Martin's on Friday at the SMU Softball Field.
The Wolves improve to 31-22 on the season and will play in the GNAC Championship at noon.
Western Oregon had six hits, including deep home runs by junior infielders
Ashlee Lynch and
Destiny Kuehl.
Boytz moved to 13-7 on the season, striking out two in the complete-game two-hitter. She walked four and posted 1-2-3 frames three times including three groundball outs in the Saints' half of the seventh inning.
After SMU stranded two in the top of the first, WOU scored the first run of the game on Lynch's two-out solo shot to left field, her ninth of the season, in the second inning.
WOU added to the lead in the third inning when Kuehl doubled down the left field line scoring
Kelsie Gardner to put the Wolves up 2-0.
Gardner made it 3-0 with a double to left field to plate pinch-runner
Cheyanne Rimer. In the fifth, the Wolves hit their second homer of the game when Kuehl hit her 13
th blast of the season to extend the lead to 4-0.
Boytz walked a pair in the sixth, but worked out of the jam with a swinging strikeout before retiring the side in order to close out the win.
Western Oregon is seeking its first GNAC Tournament Title since 2014. With two wins so far, WOU has evened its overall GNAC Championship record to 5-5, dating back to 2013.
