Heugly hits game winner as Wolves topple Lumberjacks

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Hitting the go-ahead layup with three seconds remaining, Western Oregon University came up with a block on the defensive end to preserve a 64-62 win over Humboldt State University on Tuesday.

After a timeout, Savannah Heugly extended for a layup to put Western Oregon (4-0) ahead for the final time while Sydney Azorr denied Humboldt State's (1-5) game-tying attempt with the team's seventh block of the night.

In the waning moments, HSU's Isamar Conde took the ball on the left flank for a mid-range jumper, but was blocked by Azorr. Conde managed to grab the rebound and just as the clock reached zeroes, tossed a desperation over-the-back attempt that ricocheted off the rim.

"HSU played extremely hard. They are a good team and a tough matchup for us. We played much more relaxed in the second half and did a better job of limiting offensive rebounds," WOU head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "We have confidence in each other on the floor. When the play isn't there they can trust their teammates and that has helped us grind out wins by doing whatever it takes."

The Wolves managed to snare a 25-24 lead at the break on a Shelby Snook jumper and the home team never trailed in the third quarter—though HSU managed to tie the game once at 33-33 on a Turner layupWith a 3-pointer and a pair of free throw makes from Conde, the Lumberjacks went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth to secure a 52-46 advantage.

Maddy Pape converted two free throws of her own before Azorr drained a 3-pointer at the 4:59 mark to knot that game once again, this time with the score resting at 54-54. The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, before Conde returned with her third 3-point make of the night to give HSU a 62-61 edge with 1:51 to play.

The Wolves missed their next two attempts from the floor though gritty work on the boards provided second-chance points that eventually led to Heugly's game-winning shot after a feed from Snook.

"Shelby got going in the second half and Sydney had a tough defensive assignment tonight and came through in the end with a huge block," Howard-Carpenter said.
Conde shared game-high honors with Snook as the dup finished with 15 points each. Heugly added 13 while Keyonna Jones led all bench scorers with 11 points while grabbing four key rebounds. Overall, WOU outrebounded the Lumberjacks, 44-to-34.

"We are focusing on little sections and we got through our early section with some wins, but our conference is extremely tough so we can't be satisfied with what we have done, we must continue to get better," Howard-Carpenter said.
