TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon softball team wrapped up their three-day trip to Turlock with a pair of losses in the 2017 Tournament of Champions. The Wolves fell to San Francisco State, 2-1, and Sonoma State, 4-2, on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record.
Â
WOU slips to 14-13 overall for the season.
Â
GAME ONE – SF State 2, Western Oregon 1
Western Oregon scored a run in the top of the first in classic fashion.
Kelsie Gardner laid down a perfect bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice from
Ryanne Huffman. On the next pitch,
Destiny Kuehl singled to center, scoring Gardner for the 1-0 lead.
Â
The lead held until the Gators scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. WOU had the tying run at third in the top of the fifth after a two-out triple from Kuehl, but SF State held the Wolves from getting another base runner into scoring position the rest of the game.
Â
Sammi Cadwallader pitched well in the low-scoring game. She allowed two runs on three hits with a walk, striking out two. The losing decision dropped Cadwallader to 5-2 on the season.
Â
Kuehl went 3 for 4 in the game while Gardner was 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Â
GAME TWO – Sonoma State 4, Western Oregon 2
The Wolves and red-hot Seawolves each tallied a run in the first inning. Gardner led off the game with a double down the left field line. After a ground ball moved Gardner to third,
Chandler Bishop singled into left-center to knock in Gardner.
Â
Ashlee Lynch gave WOU a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with a RBI double, scoring Kuehl.
Â
Sonoma State answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead and added an insurance run in the fifth to build a two-run cushion.
Â
In the circle,

Haley Fabian threw one shutdown inning with a strikeout in relief.
Â
Each team had eight hits with the Wolves being led by a 2 for 4 game from Kuehl.
