PORTLAND, Ore. -- Garrett Anderson finished with three hits and scored a pair of runs as the Western Oregon baseball team dropped two games in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia, 9-2 and 5-3 (9), on Friday from Porter Park.
Â
Concordia (11-29, 9-21 GNAC) scored five times over the first three innings to seize the momentum of game one against WOU freshman starter
Connor McCord. The Wolves' two-run third inning saw the first of Anderson's hits on the day preceded by a leadoff walk from
Erick Allegro, getting his first start of the year at first base. With two outs, McCord helped himself swatting a single back up the middle cutting the deficit down to three, 5-2.
Â
The Cavaliers scored one more in the sixth inning, twice more in the seventh and added a final tally in the ninth to close the game with nine runs on 12 hits against four WOU pitchers.
Â
McCord took the loss throwing 3.0 innings allowing five runs on four hits. Jake Brewer (2-7) earned the win for Concordia tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts while scattering five hits in two runs.
Â
Each team had opportunities to win game two in regulation, but it was an error with two outs in the top of the ninth that proved detrimental for the Wolves in dropping the game, 5-3. With a runner at third, WOU reliever
Elias Bedolla got Concordia outfielder Cole Crosby to hit a ball towards shortstop, but the short-hop bounced off
Hunter Johnson to allow the go-ahead runner to score. The Cavaliers' rallied for another two hits, including a pinch-hit RBI single from Eddie Vasquez.
Â
Each team scored in their half of the third inning. Anderson drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a bunt sacrifice by
Forrest Garcia and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Brock Pradere lifted a fly ball into center field, allowing Anderson to tag up with the tying run.
Â
That score held until the top of the sixth when Tanner Williams homered to right field, a two-run shot, for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Western Oregon tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh on Garcia's RBI groundout and Pradere's run-scoring single through the left side of the infield.
Jay Leverett flared a double to right field while McCord and
Jacob Martinez were each walked.
Cody Dykstra, who pinch ran early in the game and hitting for the first time, had a 3-1 count in his advantage before grounding out to send the game into extra innings.
Â
Kade Mechals was strong in 2.2 innings of relief for Western Oregon, striking out four. Bedolla was saddled with the loss, dropping to 4-4 after allowing the two runs to Concordia in the ninth.
Â
Tucker Parker improved to 1-2 with the win for the Cavaliers scattering two hits and walking two. The save went to James Brooks – his fourth – getting three fly ball outs.
Â
The final two games of the WOU series with Concordia is Saturday. The Wolves, acting as the home team, will take the field for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
