BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon softball team split Saturday's doubleheader at Western Washington, falling after a WWU comeback 6-5 in game one before a stellar start from
Haley Fabian paced the Wolves in game two, 1-0. WOU moves to 23-18 on the year with the split and is now 10-10 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Â
GAME ONE
Western Washington prevailed with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning capped by a three-run, game-winning double from Makinlee Sellevold.
Â
After the Vikings scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, Western Oregon's two-out rally in the second inning gave them the lead.
Mercedes Green drove in a pair of runs with a two-run homer, her first of the season, to left field after
Zoe Clark kept the inning alive with a two-out bunt single.
Â
The Wolves added two more runs to take a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. A hit from Clark, a fielder's choice and an error on a
Kelsie Gardner ball to shortstop loaded the bases with one out.
Cheyanne Rimer singled into center bringing in Clark. The second run crossed after a WWU error at first base on a ball hit by
Destiny Kuehl.
Â
Rimer knocked in her second run of the game with two outs in the sixth inning with another hit to center field.
Â
Sammi Cadwallader took the tough (7-3) for the Wolves allowing eight hits and six runs, five earned, in a complete-game effort. Rimer (2 for 4, 2 RBI),
Jenna Kelly (2 for 4),
Ashlee Lynch (2 for 4) and Clark (2 for 3, 2R) all had multi-hit games as the Wolves outhit the Vikings for the game, 12-6.
Â
GAME TWO
Haley Fabian (10-7) tossed her second complete game of the series allowing six hits while striking out two in Saturday's shutout of the Vikings.
Â
A scoreless pitcher's duel between Fabian and WWU's Sellevold extended into the sixth inning before the Wolves broke the seal on the scoreboard.
Emma Alfonso led off the frame with a single and Rimer doubled with one out putting a pair of runners into scoring position.
Destiny Kuehl wasted no time bouncing a ball through the left side of the infield, scoring Alfonso for the lead.
Â
Fabian, in combination with great WOU defense, stranded Viking runners at third base in the third, fourth sixth and seventh innings to keep her shutout intact. Lynch made a stellar diving grab on a line drive in the fourth inning to save a run and Fabian induced two popups to shortstop with the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the seventh.
Â
Each team had six hits in Saturday's second game with Kuehl (2 for 3, RBI) leading the way for Western Oregon.
