BASE | Wolves Complete Sweep of Cavaliers

Wakem knocks in three in mid-week victory over Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Oregon baseball team closed out a four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference sweep of a series that began in mid-March with a 6-2 victory over host Concordia on Wednesday night at Porter Park. The Wolves improve to 13-8 on the season and increase their GNAC lead to 1.5 games with a 12-5 league record.

Western Oregon loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on singles from Jay Leverett and Connor McCord and a walk to Jacob Martinez. With two outs, Justin Wakem drew a five-pitch walk for a RBI. Nyles Nygaard followed with a two-run single to left field to plate McCord and Martinez to take a 3-0 lead.

WOU would add RBI sacrifice fly balls from Wakem in the third and Leverett in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.

Concordia would load the bags five times in the game, but could only scratch a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth as one run scored on a groundball double play and another on a wild pitch. The Cavaliers would strand 15 runners for the game while WOU left seven.

Wakem added his third RBI of the night with a line drive single into center field in the top of the seventh to score Martinez after his lead-off double.

Elias Bedolla was able to work around five walks and two hit batters in earning his second victory of the year. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out a pair. Cam Walker and Jake Simmons each worked an inning of scoreless relief.

Wakem went 1 for 3 on the game with three RBI while Brock Pradere, McCord, Martinez and Nygaard each had two hits. Western Oregon outhit Concordia 10-8 on the night.

The Wolves are scheduled to return home for a four-game set this weekend hosting Saint Martin's in their home opener with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The GNAC twinbills, weather permitting, are set to begin on April 8 with a 1 p.m. start.
